Obama VP has to come tomorrow or Monday

I would expect Obama to name his VP some time early tomorrow. Or wait till Monday and get a clean start to the week.

I can't imagine him announcing the VP over the weekend when people aren't paying attention and he has to compete with the closing ceremonies of the Olympics.

I saw some speculation that he delayed the announcement in order to capitalize on the McCain housing screw up, but Don't see how much longer he can wait. He waits any longer and he risks losing the double bump of the VP choice and then convention.

Thoughts?

I can't imagine he won't want to lock down coverage for himself all weekend (namely, the Sunday shows/papers) by announcing on Friday or Saturday (my guess would be Friday, since who the hell reads/watches the news on Saturday, but my guess was also Thursday 😱)

I think if he announces it tomorrow he'll still be contending with the end of the Olympics as you said. Better to wait until it's officially wrapped up imo. Plus most of the pundits don't work on the weekend.

I don't think the housing thing really has enough legs to give Obama any kind of bump, even if he's making ads about it. Seems a pretty lame issue to raise a stink about. McCain would not be the first nor the last president to be clueless about where his assets are tied up.

Pretty sure I read he was scheduled to appear with his VP on Saturday. Also, talk prior to the Olympics was that both candidates must be ready to announce before the games because they wouldn't dare do it during.. now we see how true that was. I see him announcing tomorrow, the coy 'I know but you don't' game can't last more than a day without biting him.

^ He means Clinton takeover of the Dem nomination, which won't happen in a million years barring unforeseen death.

ah.

certainly not impossible, but on the probability scale, it ranks up there with Putin being a robot controlled by Stalin, who's been running russia from inside his glass coffin for all this time.

..hillary still wants to be pres.bad enough to cause one hell of a ruckus. from her point of view she's owed the presidency. think of all the chite hogies she's had to eat over the years served up by bill.

SHe won't do anything. The idea that Clinton would sacrifice a thousand human babies to be president is a masturbatory fantasy of Clinton demonizers. She is hardcore, but she's not going to gallop in on a horse and try one last gasp to win, it's silly. She will be a good girl at the convention and well behaved.

PJ, I think you are wrong regarding Monday-I think its's today or Saturday. My reasons:

1) As I understand it, Obama is planning a rally for Springfield Sat or Sunday - before the convention starts-which would be an ideal time to introduce the VP and get the buzz going into the convention.

2) Naming the VP on Monday would step on the opening of the convention, which is a lot more important in the pol's world than stepping on the Olympics.

3) I don't see how making this announcement will step on the Olympics. Except for political junkies, this decision is basically a matter of curiousity. At the most, it will give people something to talk/think about while watching flag waving and 13 y.o. girls do cartwheels.

Today (Friday) is most likely in my view. The major reason to delay it is that McCain has been on a tear lately (how many houses, $5,000,000 or less ANNUALLY is middle class, backhanded endorsement of the draft. etc) and ideally it would be best to keep the focus on McCain's disconnect with the real world for the time being.

My odds: Friday 60%, Sat 25%, Sunday 10% and Monday 5%.

Obama says he's decided on a running mate

EMPORIA, Va (AP) ? Barack Obama says he's decided on a running mate, but he won't say who. "I've made the selection, that's all you're gonna get," Obama said told reporters while campaigning in Virginia Thursday. Obama didn't say whether he's informed his pick yet.

Obama is planning to announce his choice in a text message to supporters sometime before Saturday afternoon, when he's scheduled to appear with his pick in Illinois.

Asked by an Associated Press reporter when the text would be sent, Obama just grinned and said, "Wouldn't you like to know?"

I would expect Monday. Day after the Olympics, news anchors will be back from China ready to be at the press conference to report on ever single word that comes out of his mouth. And let us know if he sweats while making the announcement.

George Stephanopoulus said text messaging activity is particularly high between 8 - 10 PM weekdays, so he said tonight right in the middle of the Olympics might make a lot of sense.

I was thinking surely Thursday to milk out the coverage for the end of the week into the weekend. Surely it was McCain's stupidity that held it up. You would think today, but if its not by noon EST, IDK. Fri is the day pols usually release news they want to be buried quickly.

As I said in the other VP thread, it will be by tomorrow as they are scheduled to have a joint campaign rally pre convention. I fully expect it by late afternoon to pick up all the nightly news discussion.

I've also heard news reports that the messiah has been calling his disciples that weren't selected to inform them, so reporters that have been stalking them the last couple weeks may be able to decipher it themselves soon.
