Obama Treasury nominee

My Way News Report

"President-elect Barack Obama's choice to run the Treasury Department and lead the economic rescue effort disclosed to senators Tuesday that he failed to pay $34,000 in taxes from 2001 to 2004, a last-minute complication in an otherwise smooth path to confirmation..."

Is this really the guy we want helping get us out of this financial mess. I guess he can't be any worse than what we had. Seems though we would want someone more fiscally responsible.

UPDATE:
Obama says yes

"President-elect Barack Obama says he expects Timothy Geithner to win Senate confirmation as treasury secretary revelations of tax problems....Senators' comments suggested that Geithner's tax troubles are being viewed on Capitol Hill more as embarrassing mistakes than as disqualifying misdeeds. That's despite the fact that tax problems have sunk other government nominees, including Zoe Baird, Bill Clinton's choice for attorney general, who stepped aside when word leaked that she had hired illegal immigrants as household workers and failed to pay their Social Security taxes."

Kind of my feelings, this is more of an embarrassment, then a disqualification.

Who better to close tax loopholes than someone who exploits them? eh? Just a thought.

Hell the FBI hires ex-cons all the time to catch new cons.

Well there are crooks and there are people with complecated financial dealings that can lead to tax errors. Let us hope this isn't the former.

If you're 1099 and you leave out the SE tax, whether you did it on purpose or on accident you have no business being a Treasury Sec.

In my world things aren't done on accident, they are done by accident. The language seems to be drifting. You assume, of course, that he did his own taxes, no?

The IRS expects hundreds of millions of Americans to do taxes. If Democrats like TG here and Charlie Rangel can't figure out their own shit, they should find new jobs.

I have to assume he did his own taxes because no tax accountant would make such a rudimentary mistake.

He also hired an illegal alien, failed to pay employment taxes for her, and I'm sure other associated things like workmans comp, unemployment, etc little people like me have to pay my employees. Scum bag. Perfect candidate to shovel our money to the well connected on K-street. Black Bush.

According to the article on CNN it was Obama's team that informed the committee of this error. Still it seems that for the Head of the Treasury we'd need someone who'd be competent enough to do his own taxes. I wonder what they see in him that makes them think he's the man for the job.

Maybe for Secretary of the Interior or some pother happy Horseshit appointment but not something as important as this post. The legacy of Obama's whole Presidency rests on how his Administration deals with this financial crisis, at least at this point in time.

Do you honestly believe these people are selected due to merit?

This issue aside, you do not appoint the Head of a Federal Reserve Bank as the Secretary of the Treasury....That is like letting the wolves sleep with the chickens....

Yes, well at least in this Administration, the Clinton Administration and HW Bushes Administration. Can't say the same thing for Reagan's (James Watt) and GW's Administration (Harriet Meyers, John Ashcroft,)

Obama's picks are some of the best entertainment each week.

For me too. Only in my case what's entertaining is to see just what conservativism has turned into in this country. You guys do NOTHING but constantly smear the other side with lame "gotcha" politics. Your reactionary approach to every single issue obviously doesn't sit too well with most Americans either, which might explain the epic ass-kicking in the last two elections.

I'm not saying you're always wrong with the points you're trying to make, but for the love of God, would it be possible for you to do something? Instead of providing intelligent opposition, you guys are basically the political equivalent to drunken frat boys throwing junk onto the field during a football game.

Pretty much what Rainford is saying here is that the trouble with politics is that it has to many politicians involved in it. Heh heh.
