Obama to strengthen domestic warrantless wiretapping capabilities

Obama Admin. Council Pushes to Reinforce Domestic Wiretapping

The group is proposing new legislation designed at reinforcing the Communications Assistance to Law Enforcement Act, a 1994 law published during the Clinton administration that demanded that telecommunications prepare to begin surveillance of suspects as soon as a court order is issued.

Under the proposed changes, telecoms would be mandated to not only prepare for such instances, but also for warrantless wiretapping as spelled out under the Patriot Act. Those telecoms who complied fully would be rewarded with undisclosed incentives, while those who resist or were slow to comply would face fines or other penalties.

Previously detailed nuances of the plan call for the government also to gain new warrantless surveillance powers over other communications resources such as email (e.g. Gmail), text messages (including encrypted services, like RIM's), social networks (e.g. Facebook), and internet forums.

Looks like this might slowdown infrastructure improvements as it will take longer to implement the new wiretapping capabilities when upgrading / adding broadband / other telecom services to certain areas. Might drive up service costs as well as companies seek to pass-on the expenses. However, this would expedite the capabilities of law-enforcement to monitor potential threats.

I wonder if the same people who hammered Bush about the Patriot Act will come down hard on O for this. I doubt it.

Bush was doing it because he was the debil. Obama is doing it because he cares about us and wants to protect us.

All the government wants is more power and control. It doesn't matter who is in office.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the usual suspects post that it's all somehow perfectly justified, in their typically condescending fashion.

Warrentless wiretapping is BS no matter who is in office. As soon as a warrant is issued though, the telecom's should be providing data as soon as possible. The first half of this (provide data quickly) is a good idea, but providing data without a warrant is a violation of the 4th.

I say we the voters should put the same "as soon as possible" requirement on the Federal government when it comes to FOIA requests.

I'm more curious to see how many people realize that choosing a political party to support is meaningless.

Obama is doing exactly what bush would be doing, or any other president would be doing. Since they're obviously not calling all of the shots.

This wasn't clever the first time it was posted (in a different thread).

It may not be clever, but he is correct. Those who were most critical of Bush for this kind of thing are eerily silent when they see that the new boss is the same as the old.

I don't see endless posts of bold text with endless emoticons when Obama continues these policies, but we did see those when Bush did the same thing.

Care to say something substantive? Some of us said it was wrong under Bush and wrong under Obama, but the usual left-leaning cheerleaders here would never say anything bad about their hero:
Feel free to quote where I agree with Obama on warrantless wiretapping.

Feel free to invite yourself and the rest of the mindless loony left to join in on detracting Obama for the same thing they posted Walls 'o Text™ when Bush was doing it.

I'll do you one better: I invite you and the rest of of the righties to join in on posting Walls ' Text on warrantless wiretapping.
