It reminds me of the outrage over "Assault Weapons" When in reality, both weapons are fully capable of the same exact thing...yet people are so focused on the image each presents.

Substantially accurate. So ask yourself why the police want to portray whatever image an MRAP gives off to a civilian population?

The Bearcat can withstand a 50 cal. Why do they need an MRAP costing three times as much? To appear bad ass and intimidate everyone, nothing more. Because the fact is a lot of cops have shrunken testicles and a childish fantasy that they are in a movie as a superhero. As such, they want their superhero equipment while they taken on their arch nemesis in the form of a scared 88 year old who's house they incorrectly breached.

The vast majority of police you encounter in the UK don't carry guns at all and somehow unarmed people aren't killing their cops in droves.

People aren't killing cops in droves here either. The media would have you believe that assassins are lurking everywhere, just waiting to kill a cop, but as has been shown repeatedly being a cop is far less dangerous than many other mundane professions.

People love for the media to lie to them and aren't motivated enough to educate themselves outside of what they read in the headlines. People don't care what the truth is, only how they can spin a story to suit their beliefs. This story and this thread are just the latest in a long run of misinformed people ranting and raving.

Just look at the CNN headline:

"No more military equipment for local cops". Well that sounds good! How great Obama is! Except that is not the truth. Its not even close to the truth. The truth is the only things that will stop going to local PD is grenade launchers (they had grenade launchers?), tracked vehicles and firearms over .50 caliber. Oh and cammo gear. Really? Cammo?

So AR15, M4, M16, Barrett .50 cal, MRAPs, APC, Bear Cat, Buffalo, damn near every other big ass vehicle that these cops are using are still going to be put out there. Just how many firearms over .50 and how many tracked vehicles were handed out?

Obama once again set up a series of smoke and mirrors for the sheep to gawk at. There is a lot of wool in this thread.
