IsraelNN.com) Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama privately expressed his support for a new Arab state within Israel's current borders, including eastern Jerusalem, during his meeting with Palestinian Authority Chairman and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah this summer.

According to a report published Tuesday in the Lebanese newspaper al-Ahbar, Obama told Abbas that he supports a PA state, and Arab "rights to east Jerusalem" as well. The sources said Abbas and PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad "heard the best things they ever heard from an American president" during the meeting. However, said sources quoted in the report, the candidate asked them to keep his declaration a secret.

PA spokesman Nimar Hamad said he had no comment on the remarks, other than to describe the briefing Abbas and Fayyad had given to the presidential hopeful. Later official PA reaction to the report categorically denied that Obama had made the statements attributed to him.

"The Palestinian Authority views the American elections as an internal matter and does not favor one person over another," he said in an official statement. "The PA hopes that the next American president will fulfill his commitment towards the Palestinians and pressure Israel."

Abbas, Fayyad and the rest of the Arab world are clearly hoping for an Obama victory, however. Hamas sources quoted in the article said that Arabs fear new wars would break out in the Middle East if Republican candidate Senator John McCain wins, but they believe there will be an official peace agreement with an Obama White House.

Mixed Messages in Gaza
PA Arabs who live in Gaza were reportedly celebrating in the streets with impromptu demonstrations, waving Hamas flags in anticipation of an Obama win, according to Voice of Israel government radio.

But officials for the terrorist group that controls the region were skeptical that a change in the White House would lead to a change in facts on the ground.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum was quoted by Voice of Israel as saying that voters who would have to choose between Obama and McCain were being presented with two "awful" options.

The group's Damascus-based political bureau chief, Khaled Mashaal, softened the statement by saying the group is prepared to work with any U.S. president and would welcome any change in American policy, especially if it corrected what he referred to as a "bias" toward the Jewish State.

There goes one of our major allies on the war on Terror. It's a shame this news story hasn't come out sooner.

Mods can we have a lock on this thread?
We already had a discussion about this radical Israeli website that has been shown to be complete fabrication.
In fact it was just a couple of weeks ago.

Listen, while FoxNews may be biased, this post is like quoting the Ku Kux Klan or the Black Panther newspaper on a news story that only THEY have.
It falls into the troll catergory.

Since when does "complete fabrication" mean "bias?"

I wouldn't object to a Palestinian State nor the splitting of Jerusalem to do so.

I've thought that was the right way to go for decades. The alternative is to have them endlessly and uselessly battling over a lousy piece of realestate based on one set of ooga booga religious teachings or another. And that's before the Christians, the Coptics and any other religious whackos put in their two sheckles of historical claims on it.

Jerusalem is a city of historical significance to more religions than just Judaism and Islam. I think it should be removed from the control of any one nation or culture. It should be made an international city of peace, understanding and unity of purpose to overcome the historical differences between cultures, not as a focal point for further conflicts between them.

It beats the alternative... glazing it over in green glass and using what's left as a giant, uninhabitable glowing navigational night light.

a divided Israel is heresy to evangelical Christians. over and over they say,
"if you want to be right with Jesus (gotoHeaven, etc.), you have to support
Israel, an un-divided Israel."

i was surprised the first time i listened to the Prophecy archives at
http://www.horizon.org/
how political they are, "Russia bad, secular humanist Europe bad, etc."

Horizon is a large church in Rancho Santa Fe, one of the wealthiest towns
in the San Diego area.

Harvey, a rational discussion of this issue is great. Under this thread title and link is hideous.

oh whatever...

Lets just let the OP and his friends have their fun.

After today, they won't be around much anymore anyway.... :)

Their job is done once the polling closes.

Who cares? Either partition it, or move everyone out and nuke it. Too much blood and tears spilled over the great fairy tale.

Obama is talking out of his ass to appease Abbas and bring them to the table, this will never happen though thankfully. Palestine doesn't need Jerusalem, and its time they stop trying to dictate what terms they get peace on and understand they have been conquered and take what is offered. Before it is nothing.

My sentiments exactly. Let the religious fundies on both sides duke it out.
