Obama suggests value-added tax may be an option


President Barack Obama suggested Wednesday that a new value-added tax on Americans is still on the table, seeming to show more openness to the idea than his aides have expressed in recent days.

Volcker has said taxes might have to be raised to slow the deficit's growth. He said a value-added tax "was not as toxic an idea" as it had been in the past.

Many European countries impose a VAT, which taxes the value that is added at each stage of production of certain commodities. It could apply, for instance, to raw products delivered to a mill, the mill's production work and so on up the line to the retailer.

NO! NO MORE TAXES! We are being taxed to death. Just the other day, I had to pay 9 dollars in tax after I bought something from amazon. 9 dollars! Unacceptable.

Obama hasn't heard of a tax he doesn't like. The campaign was so phony "Free health care yuck yuck! College education for everyone yuck yuck! Tax cuts for everyone yuck yuck!

VAT tax is essentially a sales tax, not a flat income tax.

This won't do anything besides hurt the poor.
But then again, poor people already don't pay enough taxes so it may be something worth considering.

Well, we've had spend spend spend, now I guess we need tax tax tax.

I hope this goes on the fast track and gets passed immediately, perhaps even made retroactive back to January 1st.

When there's a VAT on my investment income, I'll wake up.
I don't care if there's a VAT on chocolate, cigarettes, alcohol, gasoline, or restaurant bills like they do in Europe at 25% rates of the total bill because those things are easily avoidable for me or can be minimized.

Well, it would solve that pesky problem of half of America not contributing to government revenue because they pay no income tax.
