he Obama administration on Thursday proposed a new inspection and monitoring regime to permit long-haul trucks from Mexico on U.S. highways.
The Transportation Department's plan seeks to remove roadblocks put up by labor and safety groups and their allies in Congress that for years have delayed advancement of the program initiated under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

I applaud Obama for making this move, makes little sense to keep qualified Mexican truckers that drive vehicles that meet U.S. regulations, who have the proper paperwork from delivering their produce / goods from Mexico to warehouses in America.

Bush caught hell for doing the same thing, so Obama knows what he is getting into. I must admire Obama for standing up to the labor unions (specifically, the Teamsters) impacted by this and doing the logical thing.

eh...I'd rather see those long haul goods moved through our country on rails instead of in trucks

Didn't like it under Bush, don't like it under Obama. Under NAFTA Mexican trucks must meet much less stringent Mexican safety regulations as administered by the very corrupt Mexican government. Plus, we don't need to lose even more jobs, even to Mexico (admittedly better than losing them to China.)

state troopers do all that stuff now to American truckers. PLUS setup mobile inspection stations in random location along minor highways. they put down scales and pull out floor creeprs and check everything.

Please explain what your interpretation of "truly worth" means? thanx.

Keep in mind that we have to compete with people living in the 3rd world. so true value is less then they will work for. Must work harder!

How would they do that?

My understanding is fuel is much cheaper in Mexico due to taxes. If that is still the case they will certainly fuel up in Mexico and spend little if any money while in the US.

But that would make the American businesses that use them more profitable. Do you hate American business? This is just pure capitalism.

You disagree? If we didn't have a trucking union then companies could pay what the job is truly worth.

Which would be the same as what people in 3rd world shitholes make?

Wage parity with 3rd world nations is not a very good idea.

Not really.

This doesn't change the number of trucks from Mexico crossing the border.

Currently they cross the border and deliver to a terminal in the U.S.

Then the loads (including any contraband) are transferred to U.S. trucks/tractors/rail to complete the journey.
