This is a topic totally seperate from the News Conference even though OBama made a statemet concerning the arrest of prominent black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Who says because we have a Black president that all racial issues are no more...lol

By ANNE GEARAN, Associated Press Writer Anne Gearan, Associated Press Writer ? 44 mins ago
WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama said Wednesday that police acted "stupidly" in . and that despite racial progress blacks and Hispanics are still singled out unfairly for arrest.

"This still haunts us," Obama said.

Obama called Gates a friend, and said he doesn't know all the facts of the case. Nonetheless, Obama said, anyone would have been angry if treated the way Gates claims police in Cambridge, Mass., treated him. Gates, a Harvard University professor, claims he was arrested in his home after showing ID to police who responded to a report of a possible burglary.

"Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof he was in own home," Obama said during a prime-time news conference that otherwise focused on the health care debate.

Personally I totally agree that blacks and Hispanics are still singled out unfairly!!!

Here is another article on the arrest and subsequaent dismissal of charges!!

I guess he doesn't have time to read the paper much where people are getting tazed and ass raped every other day by boys of the badge regardless of victims color.

Its not like the cops just showed up for the heck of it, someone called 911, another Harvard employee in fact.

Plus Gates was acting like an a hole from the get go, had he been calm and rational he probabily wouldn't have been arrested.

Also his house had been broken into earlier which is why the door didn't work, making things look even more suspicious.

Regardless it doesn't matter, Cambridge in their apologist fashion is already bending over backwards for Gates since he is buds with the messiah, this cop will more than likely get fired and everyone can go on blaming whitey or the man.

Good. Egotistical cops need to be put in their place.

EDIT: removed racial remarks on the officer's race.

The guy was arrested on his own property after producing two forms of i.d. to prove he did live there...

Apparently, you can be arrested for having the gall to give a cop lip. I think they'll charge you with "obstruction." Nothing worse than a pussy who gets a badge to make sure he can doing the ass kicking with impunity.

Obviously, you don't read the news - Officer in Gates case says he won't apologize

Can you provide a link where it was stated that his house was broken into earlier? I haven't read anything about that.

From the sounds of it, both over-reacted and were acting like assholes, why the charges were dropped and why the officer won't give an apology.

The police showing up at Gates' house was perfectly understandable. What happened after they arrived is still up in the air. This could have ended with a 'have a nice day' kind of moment, but more likely Gates acted like an arsehole and the officer responded in kind. Sure, it is just as possible that Gates acted rationally and the officer was being a dick, but we simply do not know. One person's word against another.

What gets me is that the way it is being portrayed in the media is that the cops randomly stopped him just because they drove by and saw a black man in 'the wrong neighborhood', which clearly isn't the case.

I'm not a fan of Gates.. and I've seen him interviewed on shows before..

But, he should NEVER have been arrested. The cop was a freaking abusive nutcase. There's no law that says Gates shouldn't be pissed off. He showed the officer his ID! It was HIS HOUSE.

Gates repeatedly asked for the officer's badge number and last name.. and the officer repeatedly refused..

Though, imo, this whole thing is being called a 'racist' thing and I think racism has nothing to do with it. The fucking cop was being abusive of his power... something cops do all the time. If you treat a cop like a person when the cop wants to show his authority, he will find something to put you down.

I asked an officer for his badge number once when he stopped my friend for 'speeding' when she wasn't speeding.. He got belligerent with me, made me get out of the car, threw me up against the car (chin hit the roof of the car), and told me this was for his safety as he patted me down. Then, he refused to give me his badge number still..

I don't care what Gates did to 'provoke' the officer.. the officer was in the wrong. It's Gate's residence.. he proved it was his residence.. he can be as belligerent and pissed off as he wants in his residence. FREE COUNTRY (kind of)

Don't confuse him with logic or sense when he is ranting about the erosion of white rights.

When blacks are involved, the police can be pretty detached. I have mixed feelings about this considering all the rapings, killings, robbing, and beatings done around Morningside Heights are done by blacks. 100% black 100% of the time, AFAIK.

Honestly I think Obama should've just kept quiet on it as this has become nothing but a he said/he said case.

the only thing for sure is that someone driving by(someone living in the neighborhood perhaps) called the police because they saw someone trying to break into Gates home. Cops come and from there all hell breaks loose.

Gates claims he produced ID the cops says he got pissy for being questioned in his own home and played the race card. He still playing it today.

Interviews with neighbors seem to suggest that Gates did in fact get pissy when exactly no one knows atleast none of the articles show. Half the news articles now are just repeating crap over and over and spend half their time talking about racial profiling.

After repeatedly harassing the police officer who was asking him for the ID

He repeatedly asked him for his badge number etc louder and louder

This guy was a friggn time bomb ... no sympathy whatsoever.. I can see it when I look at him....
