WASHINGTON ? Sorry, Mr. President. Please surrender your BlackBerry.

Those are seven words President-elect Barack Obama is dreading but expecting to hear, friends and advisers say, when he takes office in 65 days
.

For years, like legions of other professionals, Mr. Obama has been all but addicted to his BlackBerry. The device has rarely been far from his side ? on most days, it was fastened to his belt ? to provide a singular conduit to the outside world as the bubble around him grew tighter and tighter throughout his campaign.

?How about that?? Mr. Obama replied to a friend?s congratulatory e-mail message on the night of his victory.

But before he arrives at the White House, he will probably be forced to sign off. In addition to concerns about e-mail security, he faces the Presidential Records Act, which puts his correspondence in the official record and ultimately up for public review, and the threat of subpoenas. A decision has not been made on whether he could become the first e-mailing president, but aides said that seemed doubtful.

For all the perquisites and power afforded the president, the chief executive of the United States is essentially deprived by law and by culture of some of the very tools that other chief executives depend on to survive and to thrive. Mr. Obama, however, seems intent on pulling the office at least partly into the 21st century on that score; aides said he hopes to have a laptop computer on his desk in the Oval Office, making him the first American president to do so.

I guess this mean no more neffing for Obama!

Hehe. I wonder if he's a P.C. or a Mac?

He said already that he uses a Mac. I simply don't believe in a Mac being in the white house as, intelligent. -_- I'm alright with Windows or Linux but, a Mac? Not-uh.

He should get a Lenovo Tablet Laptop, those things are awesome from what I've seen. :)

I think when he takes office, the AT Mod's should ban the user "Barack Obama" just to be sure.

No big deal- he can synch to his laptop and the Whitehouse servers...

As for the security angle that's pretty much wrong if he uses PGP and encryption on his laptop... at least for anything sensitive...

Or he might just let it all hang out, leave an honest trail for historians...

Yeah, I don't know that much about how BlackBerrys work, but couldn't they just tie it to the Whitehouse's enterprise email system? I would think the greater concern would be the security of the messages as they are broadcast to the nearest cell/data tower?

Actually, I'm shocked that previous presidents haven't used email. That's rediculous.

Yeah, I never really thought about it before, but that is pretty amazing.

Wait... so Clinton never had a laptop to look at the husky women online? :(

I thought that's where he found them.

think about it from an age perspective... the past 2 presidents have been about the same age as my dad. he's not a total luddite, but he didn't grow up as completely immersed in the internet as people who grew up in the 90's or later. he doesn't see a compelling use for email beyond the bare minimum needed for online shopping -- when he wants to communicate with someone, he picks up a phone and calls them.

and from the POV of a president, would you really want to have to be under the burden of knowing that every single email you write is going to be saved and archived in public view forever?

If he'd not have been able to find anything prettier than ugly women like Monica online there would be something seriously wrong with him ;)

Take it to the operating systems forum. (I've always wanted to tell someone to move their discussion out of P&N)

On topic. I can see why the president shouldn't be using wireless technology.

There shouldn't be any possibility left for someone to sit outside of the white house and intercept communications.

Better for what? Graphic arts maybe... for anything else its simply not true, especially business and security related.

That said, 99% of users just need internet browsing and MS-Office type apps - for that, any modern OS is more than sufficient.
