But that is in conversations with Abbas, the leader of the West Bank.

How Obama intends to get aid into Gaza is not clear to me.

But Obama is calling present policy unsustainable, so I wonder if Obama is the man with the larger plan, he just has not yet step by step articulated.

But in terms of the world, the USA is the biggest dog around, and in my mind, the question becomes if Obama is willing to take a firm leadership role, or will he just occasionally bark out while straddling the fence?

Obama's not capable of taking a firm leadership role with matters in his own backyard, somehow I can't see him doing so in the middle east.

Good. Nothing makes me want to be more Pro-Israel than when they attack humanitarian aid. If Palestine did that people would be bashing them left and right

I have a feeling that despite this, we will still be seen as Zionist sympathizers and the vast majority of Palestinians will still hate us.

I would criticize the aid / handouts we give to the Israelis and Palestinians as wastefully spending borrowed money that should be used domestically (or at least not borrowed), but $400 million is pocket change from what I have observed lately.

Loki, I would not quite rely on that assumption. We all must remember the Presidency of GHB, and because GHB did not have a big enough GOP in congress to stop the democrats from preventing his own domestic agenda, he spent most of his time on foreign affairs where he had a total free hand.

And was so successful with his Iraq policy and the coalition of the willing, that he looked unbeatable for a second term in 1990. Sadly for GHB, the election for a second term was in 1992, and by then American attention had wandered back to domestic policy.

It is possible that Obama has a opportunity to strut his stuff on the international scene, score success, but only time will tell there.

Probably the same way 99.9% of the aid gets into Gaza. Through proper channels.

Of all the places we could be spending our money right now, are we really going to shovel more into that shithole? Thank you Obama, for needlessly increasing a deficit already so big that 400 million almost seems insignificant.

When did they attack humanitarian aid? I recall the Israelis boarding a ship then being attacked by knife, club, and molatov wielding jihadists.

The next time hamas launches rockets onto civilian populations... I expect some bashing from you.

Awful.

Hamas has more than enough money to spread it around - but they don't have to do shit when they can depend on the EU and Obama to open their pockets.

Hamas' only expense is military and administration costs. Everything else is covered by the UN, Israel, EU, etc.

I'm sure the Left will hail this as a humanitarian gesture, but all it's really going to do is delay the inevitably, because sooner or later Israel will end up destroying most or all of where the "aid" went in Operation Cast Lead 2.

It would be smarter to divert the aid to the millions we have displaced in our wars, or better yet the millions displaced our allies displaced - such as in Yemen, Sudan, etc.

Palestinians do not need more handouts. It's like giving free money to bank robber.

Wouldn't that 400 million dollars - that's $400,000,000.00 people - be better spent on cleaning up one of the biggest national ecological disasters in our history? With our 13 trillion deficit, why are we handing money to a country that has elected terrorist leadership?

If this man is re-elected I will lose all faith in the intelligence of Americans. This is simply unforgiveable. It's as stupid as anything Bush did.

Israelis fired on the ship with rubber bullets and stun grenades, then further attacked with commandos from a helicopter.

What part of "we are broke" does this guy not understand?

It reminds me of a judge judy episode. Person A had bad credit so they had person B get them a cell phone. Person B racked up charges and doesn't pay person A back.

If Gaza wants money let them barrow it from China.

^ these, I'm all for playing peace keeper in talks, but FUCK giving ANYONE any money. as far as I'm concerned every other country that has been relying on US aid can suck my fucking cock and deal with it themselves. We have way to many problems at home to be spending money we DON'T HAVE on people who AREN'T US. If we're giving anyone money it should be attached to the bill they sent us for the loan they gave us.

Obama is certainly the man with the plan, and I'm sure he'll divulge it to us as soon as his TelePrompter divulges it to him. :)

Meanwhile, of course, Israel receives over $3B in US military aid alone... and over $100B in total aid since 1949...

http://www.ifamericansknew.org/stats/usaid.html

Definitely a biased source, but dispute the numbers, if you can...

Quit throwing away our money? Great idea, and I know just where to start...

This is a good way to avoid the current situation from spinning out of control. Even if the US simply provided the Shipping of Others Aid(after Inspection of course) it would be a great help and ease the minds of Israel.

Yeah and Egypt + SA recives billions as well. Perhaps it is time to cut all foreign aid. I think Israel wouldnt mind not having us stepping on their necks everytime they drop a bomb on a terrorists home.
