My guess is the people who will be pissed off by this were never going to vote for him anyway, so no loss.

Short trip to medical plans/federal benefits being mandated to cover same sex couples.

"Obama orders hospitals"

While I don't have a problem with the aim, I do with the means. Where is the legislature in this? I reamed over Bush for his sidestepping of Congress. I don't really care for benevolent autocrats.

Just what else can he order people to do?

Obama didn't order hospitals to do anything. He ordered the HHS Dept to establish rules concerning funding eligibility.

You take the king's coin, you dance the king's jig. Hospitals can turn down federal funds anytime they decide it is more profitable to do so.

Gays have a much lower life expectancy than normal people. Indeed, if a young gay is in the hospital the chances are good another gay put them there. Meh let them visit.

PRO-GAY AGENDA! STUPID GAYS ALL TRYING TO ACT LIKE IT'S OKAY TO BE GAY! IT MAKES ME SO MAAAAD! 😡

:music:
It's not ok to be gay
It's not ok to be homo
It's not supposed to be that way
God says its a big no no
It's not ok to be gay
It's not ok to be perverted
It's not in your DNA
What you need to be is converted

President Obama on Thursday signed a memorandum requiring hospitals to allow gays and lesbians to have non-family visitors and to grant their partners medical power of attorney.
....
An official said the new rule will affect any hospital that receives Medicare or Medicaid funding.

about time something like this happened, i know the usual suspects will cry foul for various reasons

that`s excellent news!!

As a hetro sexual male married to a hetro sexual female, I endorse the concept of marriage that carries with it social stability and at the same time carries with it a powerful set of legal rights and obligations. And one of those rights is hospital visitation rights.

Whoopie, my wife and I are in the 96% majority in the USA and are a little baffled why same sex couples would be motivated to marry. But still my wife and I are far more baffled as to why some so called men and women of GOD would go so far out of their way to make the lives of same sex couples artificially miserable.

Same sex marriage does not threaten our marriage in any way, and we see those so called men and women of GOD as first class servants of the devil. Intolerant bigots and rascals, as far as I am concerned they should eat their own shit and die.

Your wife`s name is whoopie???

That's a bit disingenuous isn't it? You are perfectly free not to pay your taxes aren't you? Sure. Let us know how it works for you.

Interesting that you mention the king. We threw out our last one a couple hundred years ago. When did Obama or any other politician become our king? I know many here consider themselves subservient, however leave those who don't want to be peasants alone.

As I said, the goal is good, however the means isn't. Would you like the next Republican President to come around and dictate the policies of his platform by fiat? Sure you would. Hey, he would be the king, and you must dance for your master.

Nail, meet head. I agree 100% with what is being done in terms of allowing homosexuals to visit their partners in the hospital etc, but this kind of thing should be done by the legislature, not by the "king" president. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Good intention here, but what about the next president who decides to "order" hospitals to do something else?

Of course hospitals could simply not take medicaid and medicare funding , but we all know that's not realistic. It's like the federal government using federal funding to force states to lower the speed limit...

Not really, no.

Consider the following:

- HIV/AIDS is not nearly as deadly as it was at the time your 20% figure was calculated.

- Gay people are, on average, more physically fit and eat healthier diets than "normal people", which increases life expectancy.

- The 20% figure didn't even take into account the high percentage of gay people who *don't* have HIV/AIDS or any other STDs.

He actually did Congress a big favor doing it this way. There are a number of Republicans who would hate to go on record voting against this, but would pay a huge penalty if they did not.

Come on, what does this hurt? The only sad thing about it is the fact it had to come to a President signing an order to force it. I do have concerns about the precedent his order sets, but I have no problem with the intent.

This doesn't only benefit gay couples. If you're a heterosexual in a relationship with someone you aren't married to it applies to you as well.

Anybody he is pissing off deserves it.

Like you.

If you ever get arrested for something involving a minority/gay/different religion/athiest all that it would take is to send them a copy of your posting history to make it a hate crime. 🙄

in some states (I want to say one of the virginias) gay people can't enter into any type of contract with eachother that would simulate the benefits of marriage.

not to mention, why should we have to? if your wife gets hit by a bus tomorrow, it's just assumed that you're in the position to make medical decisions for her. why shouldn't gay people have the same luxury just because their state bans gay marriage?
That's not necessarily true. If my wife has an advance directive on file, I have no say over what treatments she will be given. Gay people can't have the same luxury outside of a contract for the same reason non-married opposite sex couples can't: any woman could walk off the street and say she is my significant other. This puts a huge burden on the hospital to determine whether or not she actually is. A contract seals the deal. One man can easily be granted another man's power-of-attorney for healthcare (or anything else) by filing some paperwork, just as any unmarried heterosexual couple would have to do. Idealistically, I agree with this decision, but it puts the hospitals in a terrible position where they risk violating privacy and other laws simply to try to comply with an executive order.
a snippet from the NYT coverage of this...

"Gay rights advocates said the rules change was inspired by one of those cases involving a same-sex couple, Janice Langbehn and Lisa Pond, who were profiled in The New York Times last year. After Ms. Pond was stricken with a fatal brain aneurysm, Ms. Langbehn was denied visiting rights in 2007 by a Florida hospital. Although Ms. Langbehn had power of attorney and she and Ms. Pond were parents to four children they had adopted, the hospital refused for eight hours to allow her and the children to see Ms. Pond, her partner for 18 years. Ms. Pond died as Ms. Langbehn tried in vain to get to her side."
This is either a very easy lawsuit or the hospital obeying HIPAA laws. Where does it indicate that she was denied access due to her being a homosexual? I don't see that anywhere in the article. Maybe the real thing to do is fix HIPAA to address such problems.

Just what else can he order people to do?

Good catch there.

We may be so absorbed by the issue at hand that we don't look to see how it happened. The more this nation is taxed the more people will need kickbacks to stay alive, or simply to compete against those who do.

Therefore, is there anything private left in this nation or is that merely an illusion? If you want the lifeblood of Washington, you'll do as commanded. Freedom is the freedom to starve to death?
