Obama opposes legalizing marijuana

Not many politicians are for legalizing MJ. They are for prescriptions that can help people who really need the painkilling properties.

Big difference.

So I guess since he admitted to using it, he will now turn himself in to local authorities and do the time that he thinks is so beneficial to those who are caught using it. Hope? Nope.

I really thought that Obama could have changed this one, and finally made it a taxable cash crop.

Title of the article seems a bit misleading, when all he said was,
he doesn't think legalizing marijuana is a good strategy for turning around the economy.

I agree, legalization isn't going to turn around the economy, but I still support it. If Obama's opposed to legalization, he's a hypocrite. So much for keeping gov't out of personal lives, eh Barack? "It's a woman's body and gov't can't tell her what to do with it" is only true if she's thinking about abortion, but not if she wants to get high or engage in prostitution.

Please point to anything that Obama has done that made you think he would legalize drugs and prostitution.

Prostitution is not a federal issue anyway. (See: Nevada)

Never thought he would. Hadn't actually heard his position on the matter clearly stated one way or the other.

True - my mistake confusing federal (drugs) and state (prostitution) issues.

I don't agree with it being legal either, people have enough trouble with not drinking and driving, this would just be another thing for people to go out and do. In a perfect world where people sat around using it and didn't do stupid things, then sure legalize it, but we all know how perfect the world is.

You realize it's okay to have done things in your life that you believe to be wrong, right?

Obama never ran on legalizing weed, and as much as I would like him to finally start taking steps to end the insane war on drugs, I can't really say I'm the slightest bit surprised that he doesn't support legalizing it. It's still a total political kiss of death at the moment.

Isn't there a statute of limitations on that? 😕

Why would he jeopardize his political career over this?

More Americans supported legalization of marijuana than his stimulus package.

Edit: Before someone asks...

Whatever. I'd like you to try to act on that from a position of power. Remember, leaders are responsible for their actions and it can affect millions. Bamacre the Janitor saying he wants marijuana legalized is different from Bamacre the President saying the same thing.

Right. Like President Clinton saying marijuana should be legalized AFTER he left ofice?

Obama doesn't need to be for legalization. All we need hin to be for is "States' Rights".

Unfortunately, that is a conservative's position.

By eliminating the federal law, the states can do as they please.

I don't see the federal government legalizing pot anytime in the forseeable future.

Even if Obama wanted to do it, he'd wait until after the 2012 elections (since he couldn't be re-elected anyway). But then it's gotta pass Congress and they're always worried about re-election. So, nope I just don't see it (unfortuantely).

If a young blond white female dies from lack of enough marijuana, the nation will come around.

What if the same blond gets high goes for a drive and kills 2 hotter blonds?

Bonus points if she is <5. Nancy Grace's head would asplode on live television.

The Dems may not have states' rights as part of their platform, but if legalization is on the table, that may be a vehicle to get it done. It is a means to an end, unfortunately. The Republicans may tout states' rights, but that position conveniently gets tossed aside for social issues. Go figure.

Show me where legalization is even has a chance. When the (D) president says it is off the table, that is a good clue that he isnt even considering it.

It isnt (R) v (D). Nobody is touching it.

I think you misunderstood me. I qualified that with an if. You are right in that legalization is not currently on the table. My point was that if you link legalization w/states rights, as had been done above, then it is kryptonite to both D and R. I support legalization, but like many other things I support, it ain't gonna happen anytime soon, even with the government under Democratic support. The Republicans oppose it slightly more than the Dems do, but that doesn't amount to much. They are two sides of the same coin here.

Exactly. The title of the article AND the OP are both patently misleading. Obama said nothing about whether marijuana should remain criminalized.

I'm not going to comment further while I'm holding my breath. 😉

State's rights is a 'party that is out of power' position. Conservatives are all too excited to stomp on the states when they control the federal government.

I'm assuming it was the Repubs who passed the federal law over states' rights on this issue in the first place.

What I was trying to say was that Obama, in all this stuff about MMJ and having the DEA back-off, can come out for repealing the fed ban. He doesn't have to say that he supports legalization, he can say he wants states' to decide on MMJ.

I don't ever see the Repubs stepping up on this, although I believe it is really a conservative position to let the states decide. IMO it's also more of a strict constitutional position (letting states be the little laboratories of experimentation as they were originally intended).

I can't help but think he's gonna have some problem with this issue. If the DEA won't take the hint I don't see him releasing anything 'official' about it. He'd be putting himself in a position of not upholding US (Constitutional) law. that is at odds with his oath.

I am also getting tired of mis- leading commentary by a few people....
No where did it say Obama opposed egalizing Marijuana......show me where it used those words??

What it sid was -- WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama had some fun with at least one question at his online town hall, saying he doesn't think legalizing marijuana is a good strategy for turning around the economy.
Obama told the audience Thursday that one of the most popular questions was whether legalization of the illicit drug would help pull the nation out of the recession. The president jokingly said: "I don't know what this says about the online audience."

In a serious response, he said he didn't think that was a good economic policy.
