Pretty refreshing to see a US president mediating and working together with other leaders rather than dictating them. He showed great poise and leadership, especially working with china and france over their argument.

What did he accomplish?

Well, I suppose not coming off as an idealogical jackass is an accomplishment. :p Well, maybe not, but it is still a refreshing step in the right direction*. I won't say he has been a leader in this situation until actions replace words.

So he accomplished NOTHING and we started a thread over it, that's typical.

Pass the kool-aid.

This was just his first international meeting with G20... What this thread is about is in hte OP "Pretty refreshing to see a US president mediating and working together with other leaders rather than dictating them"

That is what this thread is about. If you think that isnt a good thing, you just might be a redneck that voted for Bush, and would do it again. If you dont see a problem with that, then you are the problem in this country.

He did not get much of what American officials had been hoping for, notably failing to persuade other countries to commit to more fiscal stimulus spending.
It is like the election all over again:
"Oh he looks so good"
'Oh he sounds so good"
"Oh look at him isn't he wonderful!!!!"

But when you look for quantitative results you see that not much was really accomplished.

This whole thing was yet again style over substance. And if you need proof of that then check out this passage:
?Unless we are concerned about the education of all children and not just our children, not only may we be depriving ourselves of the next great scientist who?s going to find the next new energy source that saves the planet, but we also may make people around the world much more vulnerable to anti-American propaganda.?

In a rare show of emotion from the international press, many in the room stood up and cheered after Mr. Obama was done.
OHHHH!!!! President Obama wants to educate the children!!! Oh isn't that wonderful!! :sniff sniff:

Your gross oversimplification obscures the situation, PJ. Going into this G20 conference it looked like Obama was going to get his clock cleaned. The European nations (except Great Britain) had already all announced none would have any stimulus program. The Europeans were all set to toss ALL the blame for the downturn on the USA and wanted the topic to be how much international regulation would be imposed on the financial markets, including the US ones. Obama managed to difuse the situation, agreeing in principle to some regulatory reform (as he has always called for) but not commiting to anything. He personally mediated a dispute between the leaders of China and France when France threatened to walk out of the conference. Obama got international commitments for an additional trillion dollars to the IMF-which is a rough equivalent of a stimulus program.

Did Obama bat 1.000? Of course not, but he did damn good, especially for his first major international venture.

I'd suggest you look at the situation like this-image if GWB or McCain was there. Tell me honestly if you think either one of those wouldn't have done far, far worse.

Wow, someone with actual facts in this thread? Awesome.

I'm sorry, but what does his color have to do with anything??

Any why does it seem that the only people who bring up his color are on the left??

I think they do it because they know how much it irks the Right that a Black Man is in charge. I know, it's not nice.

Yeah ... nothing.

What good is a commitment to global hedge fund regulation, a crack-down on international tax havens and a trace on securitized assets sold around the world?

They're useful for... proving Obama is a socialist who hates the rich?

(Thank goodness for Europe making a priority of the regulation of the financial sector, and that we have a president who is at least reasonably amenable to that.

As another posted noted, there's every reason to say Bush/McCain would have made the US the enemy of such reforms, further isolating and weakening the US).

Yeah, that's why Obama rebuked the America-blamers in Europe:

STRASBOURG, France ? President Barack Obama offered a gentle rebuke to star-struck Europeans Friday that it?s time for them to stop blaming the United States for all the world?s ills ? especially now that they?ve got an American president they can embrace.

Obama?s words briefly quieted a rapturous crowd of German and French students in a sports arena in this Rhine River town, as he told them Europeans had scapegoated the world?s lone remaining superpower for too long.

He decried ?an anti-Americanism that is at once casual but can also be insidious.? And he suggested that America had done its part to break with the past ? not least of all by electing him ? and now it was time for Europe to do the same.

?America is changing but it cannot be America alone that changes,? he said.

How does it feel to be so f'ing wrong all the god damn time? You must feel as small as you look.

Of course it's a step into the right direction. How else can we get our socialist, euro buddies to like us if O-Blah-ba doesn't blame the US for all the world's problems?

When Republican pigs with corks in their asses lose a Presidential election you can expect a lot of exploding pigs and pig shit everywhere. This is good for the pigs and good for the public gardens.

Huh? I'm as white as they come. Your avatar is a crab, but I don't think you're actually a crab.

I'm pretty sure it was you, and I think someone has even enshrined it in their signature. You said that if you could find a more conservative, white country than America you would gladly move to it. If that wasn't you I apologize, but I'm fairly sure it was.

He may have been oversimplifying, but I think you may be overstating the successes. Obama wanted discretionary stimulus plans, but did not get it. The monies "promised" to the IMF are just that, promises. We will have to wait and see if it materializes. And the SDRs themselves aren't anything more than a backdoor QE. I suppose the biggest potential winner out of that aspect would be the EMs, but I fear that when push comes to shove, they will once again get the shaft, and that "old" Europe will be the winner.

Also, there were no positive developments on the most important and sought after front, toxic asset removal.

I think these losses outweigh the victories, and there were some to be sure. But then I didn't think this summit mattered that much, so no harm done either way.

How about some of the stories where they think he's an idiot who's spending too much. Like Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek calling Obama's spending "a road to hell."
