human being, and most likely an American.
I would too. But the brain immediately classifies physical appearance in order to distinguish people. I'm not being racist. If I see a tall guy, I think (not so much in words, but still mentally noting) "that person is tall". If I see a woman, I think "that is a woman". Skin color is one of the first things I notice, if the person is dark, medium or light skinned, as well as eye color, hair, etc. It's not racist or un-American to notice what a person looks like, or to attempt to know what ethnic background a person is.
