I would too. But the brain immediately classifies physical appearance in order to distinguish people. I'm not being racist. If I see a tall guy, I think (not so much in words, but still mentally noting) "that person is tall". If I see a woman, I think "that is a woman". Skin color is one of the first things I notice, if the person is dark, medium or light skinned, as well as eye color, hair, etc. It's not racist or un-American to notice what a person looks like, or to attempt to know what ethnic background a person is. I don't judge people based on their appearance.

It seems that some people (primarily people on the Internet 😕 ) think that we should all just close our eyes and pretend we're all the same. That's silly. We are all different people, and the color of my skin affects that just like my height and my weight and my IQ.

True, but my point simply was that if we want to talk about race fine but let's talk about BOTH sides of him. I would rather just say we are Americans though.

Is it significant that we have the first "black" president elect? Yes, because of the racisim that was in this country such a short time ago. With that being said though, Obama isn't entirely black. Nor is he entirely white. As with almost the whole population we don't have people that are 100% something, but we talk as if people are. We need to move past all of this shit as a species. Call Obama what he is, 1/2 and 1/2 if you want to talk about race. I do believe him being "black" had a semi-large part to play for his win over McCain, but once again that is what people have focused on especially the media. Look at all of the MSM coverage of the election. Exit polls had a question about race being a factor, and that speaks volumes about what we as Americans care about. Race happens to be one of them.

I never said that we should pretend we are all the same, because we aren't.

What I am saying though, is why are we focusing on only 1/2 of his background? What about the other 1/2, why doesn't that get talked about? If you want to talk race and colors and all that, fine but lets talk about all races and colors and backgrounds.

To clear up my standpoint a little if I am walking down the street and get assaulted by some guy I will be giving skin color to help describe the guy. It is a physical characteristic that helps single people out, which can help the police find the guy who did it. It can also help to describe a specific person when communicating with another. We have become too fixated on it though, and need to not just focus on the "black" parts of Obama if we are going to look at racial features.

edit: If I am describing Obama to somebody else, yes I would use skin color to help a person to know what he looks like. I don't think that should be a factor that helps win the presidency though as it did with Obama. It's simply used to help describe physical attributes, but shouldn't be used to base any rational decision on. Many people were asked why they voted for who they did, and a common one was along the lines of "because he was black". Saying a person is black helps describe attributes of them physically, but shouldn't have been used to help get him elected (as it was by the MSM).

If McCain was black and Obama was white, do you believe the results would be different from this election? I believe results would be different yes, the outcome though might not be. It would have been a slimmer margin IMO that Obama would have won and resemble the 2000/2004 elections in how slim they were.

I'm glad that he was able to win the election, and by a good majority. It will help us in that aspect, but haven't non-whites been fighting for years to be "equal"? Now they want to emphasize their "difference". Pick one. Either you are the same as a "white" person, or you are "different". You can't be both, because they are mutually exclusive options (well should be).

"Oh you white/straight/male/etc person is treated as better than I am because I am black/gay/female/etc, and that's wrong. I should be treated equally." So we start on that process, and then it becomes, "Oh well I want to segregate myself from you white/straight/male/etc people because it will get me (insert school/money/presidency/hired/etc here)."

Either we treat everybody equal, or we don't. You want your own "pro-gay school", okay but then by your own definition you are different so don't go b*tching about being segregated because of it. You want hired/loans/etc because of your skin color? Okay well you are now segregated because it gets *you* something. As soon as it stops giving you a benefit (economic/social/political/etc) its now racist and segregation? 😕
