Agreed. I'd point out, though, that the original topic of this 'sub-conversation' was that the RIAA wasn't necessarily adopting that stance. They had started down the (now cliche'd) slipper slope of "Any copy is illegal".

Fair enough, and that stance is one in which I don't agree with.

I'm all about the radiohead/NIN model.

I would have rathered 4 more years of Iraq with McCain -- at least that didn't affect me in any way possible. This dumbass is going to take everyone's privacy away.

Quoted for stupidity.

Yeah it's going to suck for thieving bastards.
Do you think people should be able to rip their legally purchased DVD movies to their PC? Should people be able to rip their CDs to an iPod, or should they have to purchase the same albums on iTunes just to listen to it on a portable media player?

Sure piracy is wrong, but I don't think more RIAA/MPAA influence in DC is a good thing. It will lead to more crappy legislation like DMCA, which restricts the fair use rights of consumers. And civil and criminal penalties for file sharing are just nuts, I still don't understand how they can justify hundreds of thousands of dollars for sharing a song.

Harvey
Copyright and Patent Holder

Don't worry, nobody wants to "steal" your shitty song.

I'm not worried about any of my songs or my patents. I've got the law on my side.

And thanks for the personal attack, jackass. I might be interested in your worthless opinion if you really had any intellectual property of your own to protect. Of course, you never will because that would first require you to have an intellect.

I may have voted for Obama in spite of the many problems I have with his party, but it's still sad to see this happen so boldly and so soon...

When people complained Bush made it so that the government could wiretap anti-Bush people were up in arms about it. The Bush-supporters said, "Don't talk to terrorists and it won't matter." But all the anti-Bush people felt that this was just Bush trampling the constitution.

Now Obama hires some guy who worked for the RIAA and Obama "supports monetary damages as high as $150,000 per purloined music track on a peer-to-peer file sharing program" the lefties say if you "don't steal songs and it won't matter."

Pretty funny how things come full circle.

Not really.....The guy is very qualified to do what he was hired to do!!
Monday's naming of Ian Gershengorn, to become the department's deputy assistant attorney of the Civil Division, comes more than a week after nearly two-dozen public interest groups, trade pacts and library coalitions urged the new president to quit filling his administration with lawyers plucked from the Recording Industry Association of America.

So let me get this straugt you did not read the article and you are assuming that because the guy worded previousaly for the RIAA that he is NOT qualified???

I see mowhere in the article anything that states he will be prosecuting RIAA offenders......
Quit crying!!

Software Piracy and Individual Privacy are two very different things.

I'm not crying at all. I haven't used P2P since the Napster/Kazaa heyday. For the record I think a lot of what Bush did (such as many items I know of in the Patriot Act) was wrong. It's just funny to me how when Bush made certain decisions so many people here in P&N felt so strongly that he was wrong. But when Obama pulls some sort of move that would have you guys foaming at the mouth if it was Bush, well when Obama does it it's not big deal.

I'm aware of this one portion of the Constitution, something about excessive fines and cruel/unusual punishment. Could fining someone $1.5million dollars because they had 10 stolen songs on their computer fall under that category? Nah... this is Obama we're talking about, only Bush "tramples the Constitution."

For the record I'm not tring to come acrossed anti-Obama, my comments are simply some things I've noticed standing on the sidelines here. You may now continue on with blaming Bush for everything and holding Obama up as a minor deity.

Well I prefer a minor "diety" to a major douchebag
