The idea behind drug laws is a utopian fantasy of nobody getting hooked on them. This is simply impossible. The more the government intervenes to fix this "problem" the more it fucks it up. It drives up the price of drugs which increases theft and other behavior that people wouldn't be taking part in if their drugs weren't artificially expensive.
We aren't going to create a perfect society where nobody ever ODs or gets hooked on drugs so let's stop causing all the collateral damage in trying to achieve the unachievable.
