"Currently, 70,000 commitments for "Learn and Earn" paying jobs have been made, from nonprofits to corporate giants like Bank of America to federal agencies. The other 110,000 commitments currently on the table are for unpaid internships and other occasions to learn "Life Skills" and "Work Skills" through workshops and mentoring."

Unpaid work = slavery. Pretty sad coming from our first black president.

Internships are how you gain experience in a field you are trying to break into. Don't be an ass. If you can't get hired in a specific field then an internship, paid or unpaid in that field could put your foot in the door and open up future opportunities.

in my days we've never had unpaid internships. this generation and the next will feel the fail because of fools

On a more serious note I'm very interested to see the jobs report tomorrow. The ADP report was much higher than the consensus prediction so maybe we will have some surprisingly good news.

I am afraid I must agree with SandEagle here. Unpaid internships are almost slavery. When I was a student an internship paid decently, maybe 1/2 of what the starting salary would be. This should be illegal.

I don't think it really has anything to do with Obama. It's a sign of the ongoing fucked up labor market. It is pretty ridiculous though. Outside of a vocation or educational program, it shouldn't be legal for for-profit corporations or government employers to take on volunteers.

Only because the labor market is messed up. You know what companies used to do when they needed people? They would hire and *gasp* train them. The problem is there is no employment demand for many young Americans today.

Wow, so Obama is forcing the 110,000 commitments above the 70,000 to pay nothing! Damn that Obama and his manipulation of Corporate greed. OP are you really this stupid... 🙄 indeed.

unpaid internships are a return to the gilded age. wealthy children become apprentices then masters in a trade, while the paupers keep slaving to stay alive.

only those who have money can support themselves can afford to do a paid internship while drawing no salary. those who have to get that paycheck to pay the bills, put food in their stomach, and keep a roof over their head: not so much.

it will almost always be only the wealthy's children who can afford to take an unpaid internship, getting their foot in the door and that nice job. while those less fortunate keep working just to keep their head above water.

Oh right, because the people taking those jobs will be forced to do it. Its not voluntary in any way. Thank you for informing us of this horrendous scandal.

It ain't slavery if you willingly do said unpaid work. So lets go over this real quick:

Forced unpaid work = slavery

Voluntary unpaid work = not slavery

And there are very good reasons that a person would volunteer to do work for free.

Unpaid internships will always go up during a stagnant labor market because employers don't have to pay their interns in such a market. However, the concept of the unpaid internship is hardly new. When I was in college in the 1980's about half the available internships were unpaid, and that was while the economy was healthy.

why the fuck would anyone do an internship? honestly, people who have done them let me know why you chose that over lets say an apprenticeship where you get fucking paid to work and learn? interns are corporate slaves, it has nothing to do with gaining experience and everything to do with showing you're good enough to be a corporate slave and do whatever they want. only an idiot would work for free.

Pretty stupid post. My ex-gf interned at a one of the Federal Courthouses after law school. She gained good experience but more importantly made such good contacts from networking that after passing the bar, she had her choice of numerous agencies offering her positions.

That's fine, doing it for free is still retarded.

The main reason is the horrible economy. Companies have a huge swath of people they can choose from. If you intern for free, they will see your work ethic and get to know you...which will vastly increase your chances of getting a job. You are still effectively unemployed, but your ability to land a job has greatly improved.

What else are you going to do anyway? Daytime TV is not very good.

yup. as a manager i wouldn't hire her. she shows poor judgment. has poor decision making skills. and the fact that she was with CC is another bad move. i'd rather work retail than go for an unpaid internship lololololol

Why not internship for free or even volunteer for a good cause? especially if you don't already have a job, like what else constructive are they do with their time not making any money or future? debate useless geek info on ATOT? lmao

That's because you are an idiot. Unpaid internships are a great way to get your foot in the door and to get valuable experience. If you are graduating from college and have had an internship you are MUCH more likely to be able to get a job right out of college. Ether for the people you did the internship for or someone else because not only do you have and education but also experience in the field you are getting into.

I don't think I could have seen myself doing an unpaid interneship while in college. How are you supposed to pay your bills? Unless you are supported by your parents, you either have to work ALL the time (internship during the day, part-time at night) and have no social life, or you take extra money out in student loans and graduate with more debt. Thankfully I had paid internships (that we called co-ops) in college...

Or are internships not full-time?
