Obama condemns Syria, uses strongly worded phrases

President Obama and other world leaders condemned the "unspeakable assault" Saturday by Syrian forces on the city of Homs, a sustained attack that activists say killed more than 200 people in what may be the bloodiest confrontation of the uprising against Bashar Assad's regime.
The assault sparked fierce international outcry ahead of a meeting Saturday of the U.N. Security Council, where the U.S. and other nations are pushing for a vote on an Arab League-backed resolution calling for Assad to step down.

Obama, in perhaps his most forceful statement to date about the unrest in Syria, accused the Assad regime of having "murdered hundreds of Syrian citizens, including women and children" in Homs. He called on Assad to step down, describing the violence as a sign of the regime's "inevitable collapse."
"Assad has no right to lead Syria, and has lost all legitimacy with his people and the international community," Obama said in a written statement released Saturday morning.
He called on the Security Council to act on "this abhorrent brutality," and take a stand against Assad.
The violence coincided with the 30-year commemoration of the massacre in the Syrian city of Hama by Assad's father, Hafez.

If they had oil, he would have started the bombing long ago, like he did in Libya. It is good he is finally saying someone else should do something about it, though. It is certainly a step in the right direction.

The OP is on ignore but going by the message topic, the outrage! How dare he not use killing for all his communication of disapproval!

Same as that bastard Reagan, with the phrase 'tear down that wall', why didn't he have the USAF bomb the wall?

If I am on ignore, don't post in my threads. It is the sign of a weaker than normal mind. Using ignore shows your position cannot survive impact with an opposing view. Replying to someone who is on ignore shows you do not have the will power to even abide by your own decision to self censor the views you see.

Pathetic.

Did you see all the people complaining about your bad behavior in the moderation thread? Did it ever cross your mind that maybe that could be why some people have you on ignore?

Guess we know where we are going next.

I mean, we're going to do something assuming he doesn't stop killing his own people. An alternative course seems unlikely.

The US has been forcefully pushing for international action for quite some time now.

They are FINALLY getting to the point where they are starting to talk about a resolution. Should have done that many months ago.

Since Syria is a Middle East destabilizing force (they fund groups on the US Terrorist list), and since they have been doing the same thing the Libyan government did, why the long wait?

Nope, since the "bad behavior" was all said by people with diametrically opposing views as attempt to force the mods to silence me so their fragile world views would remain unchallenged.

In Libya, there was a UN resolution to protect civilians. This is not the case for Syria; Russia wont allow it.

Oh really? Your post right here shows that you have no clue as to what you're talking about.

The US itself has implemented bilateral sanctions against Syria since early 2011 in response to the violence. Additionally, the US repeatedly pushed for action within the UN Security Council in 2011, both in June, and again in October Security Council resolutions were vetoed by Russia and China. The US has continued to push for them since then, and finally things are getting bad enough that the Russians may be shamed into dropping their opposition.

If you are interested in additional information feel free to check out the Security Council's website's 2011 archive along with the US mission to the UN website.

Sanctions stop no one. Haven't you learned that by now?

Post these attempts.

Well someone who puts people on ignore then falsely attributes something in their willful ignorance is an asshat.

Wait, so you are complaining about a lack of UN resolutions... but are dismissing sanctions? You think UN resolutions are more effective?
Post these attempts.

Sorry, it was the end of last May, not last June. This was submitted with US support, Russia vetoed.

Resolution in October, supported by the US. Russia and China vetoed.

Please educate yourself in the future before opening your mouth.

Anything proposed/supported by the West will be blocked by Russia.

And has been demonstrated, sanctions just stiffen the resolve of leaders. When has a regime changed due to sanctions?

It's not really that simple. Once implemented, sanctions are unlikely to alter the behavior of a country, yes. There is a fair bit of evidence that the THREAT of sanctions can force less adamant actors to comply however.

It's a pretty interesting topic, but the conclusion is basically that actually using sanctions almost never works, but you need to implement the useless sanctions to retain credibility with the people that threats of sanctions will work on. (there's a good amount of debate on this issue, but it's a pretty fascinating topic)

Folks, this is a topic about Syria and what the President said about it. Please leave the armchair moderation and off-topic sniping between posters out of it so the actual topic can be debated.

Thanks!

I welcome Pres. Obama's statements on Syria. I certainly hope that this situation will not be resolved with military action, but as time goes on and the situation continues destabilizing, it may be the only alternative to a long and protracted civil war. We should continue pressing non-military actions for the time being and see how the situation develops. Shame on Russia though.
