Obama Cancels Putin Summit Meeting in Moscow

Not an ideally managed situation, but let's be honest. The same people saying Obama is "butthurt" would be the ones criticizing him as being soft, manipulated, etc. if he kept the summit. The dude can't win with some people.

...why would we call someone soft for attending a world summit? Showing up to a situation only shows "balls" and "initiative"... and we can't have that, now can we?

People such as you just love your scarecrow don'tcha?

BTW: I am with Obama on this. Snowden commited a crime and the US is asking for Russia to return him. I am still glad Snowden did what he did but it is right of the US to ask for Snowden back.

From CNN:
"...trying to count the ways in which foreign policy has gone badly for Obama makes for a stunningly long list.

Relations with Russia have fallen off a cliff, making the theatrical "reset" of 2009 look, frankly, cringe-worthy. No, it's not all Obama's fault. Putin has sought to belittle the U.S. and humiliate Obama personally, a man he reportedly despises, as part of his campaign to build up his authoritarian rule at home. Obama just canceled a summit meeting after Putin -- incredibly, posing as the great defender of freedom -- granted asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden despite the very public pleas from Washington, which only made the U.S. look more powerless.

You might confuse the times with the old Cold War days, but back then the U.S. looked mighty -- one of two awe-inspiring superpowers. The U.S. doesn't exactly inspire awe anymore.

Obama dramatically warned Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, as he slaughtered his people by the thousands, that if he used chemical or biological weapons, he would cross a "red line." The line was crossed and not much happened. Syria is crumbling, self-destructing in a civil war that I, for one, believe could have turned out quite differently if Washington had offered material and diplomatic support for moderates in the opposition. Fears that the opposition would be dominated by extremists became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Syria's war has sucked in Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah militia, taking Lebanon to the edge of disaster and making Iran a major player in a war for the survival of the anti-American Shiite axis -- Iran-Syria-Hezbollah -- while the U.S., to all appearances, stands helplessly on the sidelines.

But it is Egypt where America's foreign policy fiasco is most visible..."

Scarecrow? Seriously? Get over yourself. People were all over Obama for meeting with world leaders early in his presidency - maybe you remember people losing their shit over his "bowing" to other leaders. Now Putin is sheltering a fugitive, Obama protests this by not showing up (not a surprising gesture) and people are calling him "butthurt". Like I said, dude can't win.

Is it too much to ask to have a president show up and act like the representative of the citizens of the United States of America? I don't want my representative to bow to anyone and I don't want him to run away from a conversation about issues. That's all.

What issues is he running away from?

If nothing else, think of all the money this will save. Remember when he went to meet leaders of other countries before how much conservatives complained about the cost? Now that he isn't going they complain about that.

There is literally no combination of actions that Obama can take outside of changing his party to Republican that will stop the complaining.

It was the same thing with Bush...libs bitched about his golf, vacations, etc. as well. Hell, I remember Bush giving $5B to Africa for AIDS and liberals bitched that he wasn't giving it away fast enough.

Obama stomped that golf record out in a hurry. He was looking to make The Guinness Book in a hurry, what - with beating out the ranking champion of most holes in 8 years, he beat it within 4!

So talented... such a hard working... :awe:

While I agree that people have some degree of selective outrage on vacations and such, liberals widely praised Bush's efforts to combat AIDS in Africa. The only complaint I remember was about his cuts to funding for condoms and such, which I view as a totally legitimate thing to criticize him about.

I distinctly remember him being criticized for not giving away the money fast enough. I looked into the reason why at the time...the delays were due to the need to put systems in place to assure that the money actually went to the AIDS programs instead of into the pockets of corrupt government officials.

"Run away from a conversation about issues". What a laugh. How do you have a civil discussion about "the issues" with a 10,000 lb elephant in the room and a blatant insult from Putin?

I guess I missed those criticisms. I know that I for one have repeatedly praised his efforts there outside of his foolish position on condoms. I have very few kind things to say about that guy, but that's definitely an area of his that I find very positive.

I'm not a Bush fan either...but the incessant criticism over the most trivial matters was shear lunacy at times. Not unlike what we're seeing with Obama.

A lot of the crazy stuff was along the "birther" lines. My impression of Obama's foreign policy was favorable for some time, far better than that of Bush, but over the last year or so it seems that he's gone off the rails at an increasing pace. Once Snowden hit "crazy" didn't seem so crazy with Obama becoming a bully. I think he has a mean narcissistic tendency.

Because people like you criticize Obama no matter what he does or doesn't do. If you don't have a specific reason to criticize him you'll make one up.

People like you are the AnandTech version of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Ann Coulter... with a sprinkling of Glenn Beck and a whisper of Michael Medved; I wouldn't be surprised if criticizing Obama specifically and Democrats in general is somehow a sexual turn-on for you.

Obama has better things to do - vacation!

Difference between Putin and Obama - first one does not need an army of analysts to figure out how things in the world work. Putin simply owns.
