Obama asks for an "AMEN" during a political speech

During a speech to a carefully handpicked and vetted crowd to insure absolutely no dissent was present President Obama called for the crowd to shout the religious term "AMEN" to show their agreement to his speech. I found it rather alarming as an obvious attempt by the President to combine politics and religion. Is he trying to institute a State religion?

Someone's been a watchin faux news again. Can I get a Amen?

Amen Brother! But I don't watch Fox news, or the whole channel. This was on Drudge and since i'd been posting in an Ann Romney thread I thought it would be fun to do.

Part of what is funny to me is that I see him as a failed televangelist with little [AMEN] signs that light up and blink as he exhorts the crowd and a bored group of people halfheartedly reply. The he passes the hat, grabs the cash and heads to the next town. [AMEN]

At least i'm funny sometimes, that's more then several of the lefty oh so serious posters with sticks up their asses can say.

Sadly is you are not funny at all. This thread is neither politics or news but a 100% troll thread-unless you are claiming the GOP has exclusive rights to Christianity and all Christain expressions. Are you?

Another gem, let me quote it again.

It's about the President giving a campaign speech and it doesn't meet your qualifications for either Politics or News? Really? Really?

The way things are going for him he's soon going to have to transport that crowd with him from event to event. It will be far easier than going through all that effort at each location. He's getting booed with regularity as of late when he takes a chance on the average proletarian.

Control freaks gotta control.

I'm more pissed off that from that speech you can see where this issue is headed - more government subsidies for college, more government regulation and more government school loan forgiveness. Or simpler - more burden on the taxpayer.

Thank you for the non-partisan report from the Weekly Standard...😵

I was listing to this when he said it, I cringed. He sounded like Reverend Right when he said it. At some point it would be nice to have a respectful person in the big house. It has been to long. And yes if bugs me when I here people say "and may God bless America". When any person in public office asks a/any deity to bless our country, it amounts to government approval of, or for, that deity. How would you feel if he or any public officer ended with My Ala bless America? Would it be any different?

That's exactly what I was thinking. If he wants to say "amen" to pretend he has Christian values, he's no different than just about every other politician. What I really don't like is how now the government is going to be handing out more free money to idiots who major in some worthless degree.

"Amen" can be used colloquially without implying religiousness. Given the crowd is college students from a state university, I'd bet they're either not very religious or are taking use of the word casually.

Well since Bush used that word in public on numerous occasions, it should be easy for you to find a thread on ATPN with people 'foaming at the mouth' about it. Can you provide links, or is this another example of the conservative culture of victimhood?

Remove Obama and insert Bush (or Rommeny) in the article and you'll have foaming at the mouth people quickly commenting on this thread about the separation of church and state.

That's true, but it's not any worse than the converse: Because the subject is Obama, right-wingers will seize any opportunity to criticize him by making an article/blog post.

Mono, you might want to get this thread closed before other GOP nutters realize that the charges of Obama's 'War on Religion' are completely unfounded.

Can you find me a speech when he used it then?

It's called an idiom. Kind of like when someone says "Speak of the devil" they aren't actually referring to the devil, although I can see how confusing that must be.

1. I ain't a troll. Grump? Maybe, but not a troll.

2. I do not LIKE that he said "Amen", but I do not like that ANY POLITICAL FIGURE would do the same in a heartbeat. AAMOF, 50% of the country would be OFFENDED if they didn't (wha??!?!?).

3. As mentioned earlier. Doubleflip. First he is Muslim [/sinister music] OMG!!! now he says "Amen"???!!?! O M G!!!!!! You are allowed to criticize, but try to stay on one line of condemnation.

4. Bush WAS a religious "Born Again" President. He did this kind of thing MANY times. He was criticized more on his political reasoning backed by religion than by saying "Amen" after a speech.

This whole thread is stoopid. Why the hell did I post here?

/me wanders away confused.

Thanks😉 But we're not all idiots and it's not free money, well what I'm getting isn't at least:\ It's just keeping the loan rates down lower than what they would be (3.4% vs 6.8%)

Yep, pretty sure he was having them say "Amen" to him😉

This "amen" thing is a complete nonissue imo. But I am interested in your statement that the crowd was hand picked and vetted. I didn't see anything in your link that confirms this...do you have another source? Thanks.

I figured they'd have to be hand picked and vetted if the Secret Service were doing their job of protec........... ahhh! I see what you did there!
