Obama Administration Advises Limits On Free Speech At UN.

Not seeing too much about this farce in the news:

"The Obama administration has marked its first foray into the UN human rights establishment by backing calls for limits on freedom of expression. The newly-minted American policy was rolled out at the latest session of the UN Human Rights Council...The new resolution, championed by the Obama administration, has a number of disturbing elements. It emphasizes that 'the exercise of the right to freedom of expression carries with it special duties and responsibilities . . ." which include taking action against anything meeting the description of 'negative racial and religious stereotyping.'"

Recall that the "Human Rights Council" is mostly African and Asian (and Muslim)countries and has a long record of vehement anti-Semitism and contempt for Israel. Even Kofi Annan criticized them for that, and said the Human Rights Council has a "disproportionate focus on violations by Israel" while neglecting other parts of the world such as Darfur, which had what he termed "graver" crises." (Wiki)

The Human Rights Council is actually the former UN Human Rights Commission which had to have it's name changed because it was such a joke (recall they had Sudan on the commission). Again Kofi Annan criticized them:

"We have reached a point at which the commission's declining credibility has cast a shadow on the reputation of the United Nations system,' Mr Annan said as he addressed the commission's annual six-week session at its Swiss headquarters...

Unless we re-make our human rights machinery, we may be unable to renew public confidence in the United Nations itself,' he said."

You might also recall from last Spring that the Human Rights Council was responsible for the UN's Geneva "Anti Racism" conference and gave Libya the responsibility for organizing the conference and had Mahmoud Ahmadinejad invited to make the opening speech. Thirty countries walked out on the speech.

These are the same people pushing for limits on speech that they feel is offensive to Islam. The US used to reject membership on the council and now it is joining them in the charade.

"Privately, other Western governments were taken aback and watched the weeks of negotiations with dismay as it became clear that American negotiators wanted consensus at all costs..

Even the normally feeble European Union tried to salvage the American capitulation..."

Every day Obama admin moves closer to supporting all the bad actors on the world stage. If you look at other admin people like Mark (praise to Chavez - end talk radio) Lloyd, Cass (police rumors on the internet) Sunstein etc. then its not hard to see a day where people can go to jail for criticizing Islam (other religions will be fine) like Bridget Bardot did in France.

Don't use such big words if you really want a response.

We already have limits on free speech and insulting the OP is all this thread is worth.

When the OP proudly wears a troll badge he doesn't really deserve rational responses.

I'm not sure what the OP is complaining about. The constitution trumps any treaties or UN resolutions that conflict with it. Free speech in our country isn't going to change one iota because of anything the UN does. The joint statement was benign. The statements of Arab leaders don't represent US statements.

Then there's the bullshit of the entire premise of the whole article as stated in its first sentence that Obama is calling for free speech restrictions, as opposed to calling for responsibility in utilizing free speech. You can imply anything you like, but ask any US delegate or admin rep if they support legislation here or abroad that punishes free speech if denigrating to religion. They'd obviously decry such laws.

Maybe the US UN delegation wants to work to change muslim countries' attitudes, and the best way to do that is from the inside, and not from the outside pointing a finger and wagging it.

Regardless, OP is not here to debate or raise issues. He's here to paint any possible move by Obama as evil (unless Obama supported murdering gays, then thumbsup!)

It's clear you don't understand the situation at the UN jonks. The jokers on the commission in question at the UN want penalties for insulting Islam (even as they are doing most of the insulting themselves). The US is so far out in front with this now that even the Euros are shocked.

Obama has also been appointing trans-nationalist lawyers to gov. positions (see Harold Koh at State). They advocate making the US comply to international laws at expense of Constitution. A reason Obama and Holder were going after CIA lawyers even though they knew they cant convict them of anything was because they set them up as bait for international legal groups.

Obama's ideology is crystal clear when you top making excuses for him

Add to all UN stuff Obama throwing Iranian moderates down the well. Obama and Co cut off funding for the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC). Among other things they compiled lists of protesters imprisoned in this summer's uprising (and those who were killed in the crackdown).

"IHRDC is what human-rights advocates should be: methodical, precise, and apolitical in their work. And yet, the Obama administration has, without explanation, cut off all federal funding to the group which has consistently fulfilled its mandate."

?If there is one time that I expected to get funding, this was it,?? said Rene Redman, the group?s executive director, who had asked for $2.7 million in funding for the next two years. ?I was sur prised, because the world was watching human rights violations right there on television.??

Many see the sudden, unexplained cutoff of funding as a shift by the Obama administration away from high-profile democracy promotion in Iran, which had become a signature issue for President Bush. But the timing has alarmed some on Capitol Hill.

?The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center is at the forefront of pioneering and vitally important work,?? said Senator Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, in a statement yesterday. ?It is disturbing that the State Department would cut off funding at precisely the moment when these brave investigations are needed most.??

Michael Rubin, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative Washington-based think tank, said, ?It is a shock that they did not get funding.?? A reason, he asserted, may be that ?the Obama administration is so focused on engaging Iran that they don?t want this information to get in the way.??

It's been acknowledged by Iranian experts that the regime there is a "zombie" on it's way out. Basiji aren't beating people at big protests anymore. Factions in leadership have been distancing themselves from Ahmadinejad and trying to act like they were supporters of the greens all along.
