I'm pretty sure that this capability is pretty much already in many new cars and just need either to be switched on or have just a few extra electronics installed to activate.

utomotive computers, or Electronic Control Units (ECU), were originally introduced to help with fuel efficiency and emissions problems of the 1970s but evolved into integral parts of in-car entertainment, safety controls, and enhanced automotive functionality. This presentation will examine some controls in two modern automobiles from a security researcher's point of view. We will first cover the requisite tools and software needed to analyze a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Secondly, we will demo software to show how data can be read and written to the CAN bus.
Then we will show how certain proprietary messages can be replayed by a device hooked up to an OBD-II connection to perform critical car functionality, such as braking and steering.
Finally, we'll discuss aspects of reading and modifying the firmware of ECUs installed in today's modern automobile.
Also a security expert said it is possible to cause someone to lose control of a late model car remotely.

At this point I'm looking for that early 90's Super Chevy article on how to retrofit an 80's Camaro with a 500+ hp engine and transmission that can get close to 30 mpg if you keep your foot out of the pedal.

I can see some idiot bumping up the signal strength and hacking a device transmitting that one car every 50' has locked up its brakes, causing every other car on the hiway to lock up its brakes also.

Probably would be relatively easy to rob a bank, keep your escape route clear, and gridlock any police vehicle by causing jams and/or accidents.

Except what is in the ECU now isn't easily read by a police cruiser 100 feet away, nor should it be. I have no problems crawling under the hood of my car...so if they add this to cars, I'll either cut the antenna off, or wrap it in a faraday cage.

So fucking naive.

----

Driverless cars are an incredible future. Pcgeek, who would want them? Who wouldn't. They will wildly increase safety and efficiency of transportation.

I am behind driverless cars 100%. I don't know we need the gov putting this in all cars though. Obviously it will track everything but with our smartphones and the toilet paper that the 4th amendment has become you are tracked everywhere anyway.

Driver-less cars aren't going to be the norm anytime soon for the same reason we don't have a moon/mars base or flying cars, the immediate profit, cheapest is best economic model along with destructive selfishness it entails which is the main thing hindering the true potential of man's technological abilities.
