Oatmeal overflows

Hey. I'm getting into eating oatmeal for breakfast (Quaker Oats - original, with some splenda and maple extract) for my weightlifting diet. However, I haven't figured out how to keep the oatmeal from "puffing up" and expanding while cooking so that it overflows the bowl and gets all over the bowl and paper towel. Really a pain in the ass, no matter how big a bowl I use. Even if I put a cover on it it pushes the cover up to overflow.

Any tricks to keep this from happening? Don't want to go to instant (original is cheaper and less processed = lower GI).

Thanks for the help.

Are you using the old fashioned oats or the instant oats? The instant oats are pretty much the same as the old fashioned oats ( I am talking about the ones that come in the big tubs).

Yeah. Like the taste. Bought the instant ones, maybe it'll be better--but if there's a way to get the old fashioned ones to work I'd prefer them.

Buy bigger bowls and/or make less oatmeal. Maybe even using less liquid.

I've never had the problem, but I've never used splenda (and I doubt thats the problem).

Just add half the water and heat it up for half the time, then add the other half and heat for the second half of the time. Thats what I do with the old fashioned grits I eat.

Don't add Splenda until afterwards.

I've heard of adding the rest of the milk later, but there has to be a way to make this work.
