Willful defiance among students will no longer be punished. Surely this will prepare these kids for real life when they start swearing out their bosses and expect a pat on the head.

Mouthing off in class or failing to follow a teacher’s instructions will no longer lead to suspension in Oakland schools, a ban that will be phased in and be fully in effect just over a year from now, the school board unanimously decided Wednesday night.

Oakland Unified will become one of a handful of California school districts that restrict suspensions to more serious offenses and eliminate the punishment for willful defiance — a broad category of misbehavior that includes minor offenses such as refusing to take a hat off or ignoring teacher requests to stop texting and more severe incidents like swearing at a teacher or storming out of class. San Francisco and Los Angeles are also among those districts.

The state already bans suspension for willful defiance from kindergarten through third grade, and Oakland’s decision extends it through high school. The new policy, which goes into full effect July 1, 2016, also bans expulsions and the practice of involuntary transfers — moving students from one school to another — for willful defiance infractions.

Student Dan’enicole Williams, a McClymonds High School sophomore, said the ban will force educators and administrators to focus on why students are behaving a certain way rather than just suspending them.

Oh California you have taught us so much and yet learned so little. It's the way of things I suppose.

First of all, that's a helluva first name.

Second, how about the brats and their parents focus on WHY they're being disciplined?

LOL, a career many are already questioning why they even bother are going to get even less support from administration. I especially like the quote from a sophomore as if his opinion is valid in any way. Poor teachers, held to high standards for kids performance, but get none of the support they need.

In Texas(depending on the district) willful defiance/insubordination never leads to any type of suspension(sometimes all it gets is a stern lecture) unless it becomes a chronic issue.

answer is likely poor parenting but good luck convincing people of that!

When you reward people for bad behavior you get... bad behavior. Even I know that.

I do understand what they are trying to accomplish. Too many times teachers will move to suspend students with bad behavior because they don't want to implement a much needed behavior program in their classrooms. It's too much work, so they send the troubled student to the principle's office whenever the child steps out of line. Still, this isn't the way to do it. Once children realize that they aren't going to be punished for bad behavior the classroom is going to be like a zoo.

This is what happens when you leave liberals stupid people in charge
Fixt that for accuracy. Stupid people come in all shapes, sizes, and political affiliations.

It's OK, it's just a policy to ensure that there will always be a class of citizen that are permanent slaves. The smart people teach their kids better than to mouth off.

Sometimes it's the only way, but this article is very vague.

It presents the idea, at least as some here are reading it, that a kid can sit in class and swear at the teacher with no repercussion and I assume that isn't the case.

And yet if the teacher yells at the student they'll get suspended from their career.

So glad I don't live in a major city setting like this.

Why? Because their parents don't care. If I was defiant in class, I'd have had my ass beaten when I got home. Around here, disruptive in class means gone to the office for 10 minutes. I think on the 3rd time, the student can be removed from that class for a day. Subsequently, it escalates to suspension. It isn't suspension the first time; and I'd be surprised if in Oakland, the first offense leads to suspension, though the article implies this. If I recall, there's some sort of form that I'm supposed to fill out if I send a student to the office; I haven't had to do so in at least 10 years.

honestly in my school experience there never was suspension for this sort of stuff.

You get first yelled at, then sent to the principal if you don't comply, where you get more yelling and some punishment like maybe writing why you did something, those sorts of stuff.
To arrive to a suspension there has to be a track record or something really bad like violence. And even then, at first you get excluded from school trips and stuff. Also before any of that stuff there is special 1 on 1 tutoring to try and make the difficult kids learn something before they finish compulsory schooling.

Still, if the parents don't care about suspensions, they are useless. At that point you have to decide whether the other students are more important than saving that student, and even then what can you do as a school if education at home is missing?

For high school, expulsion is the obvious choice since people are there because they want to.

Suspension is overkill for willful defiance. That's what after school detention is for. Suspension really should be for more egregious acts of buffoonery.

When I was in school (70s) kids could not be "willfully defiant" like today. Teachers handled that shit. Nuns would beat you with a switch. Even in public school I ran my mouth one time IN KINDERGARTEN. Teacher smacked me so hard I woke up on the floor with a busted lip and a knot on my head. You didn't tell mommy. You STFU and behaved.

Just another example of POA.

They are in Oakland, it can't get any worse.

Yeah, that. For all we know the teachers could be the ones pushing for the policy, it gives them one less thing to deal with.

Take your hate off.
No!
Whatever

or

Take your hat off.
No!!
Trip to principals office
Suspension
Paperwork
Phone Calls
Angry parents blaming the teacher for their kid being an asshole

Take the path of least resistance. If they're teaching in Oakland it's not like they have any expectations of order, discipline and attentive students eager to learn. They're just trying to get through the day with the least hassle and the smallest chance of being shot.

In elementary school, they paddled us. Seemed like I was in the principal's office once a week for something.
