But I'm sure they'll have plenty of administrators and paper-pushers left in their school departments, public works, police, fire, City Hall, et cetera.

Oakland is also on the verge of laying off 80 officers. This is happening in the wake of the riot.

The city itself is only 400,000 people but places like East Oakland are basically giant pits of welfare recipient breeding pools for future criminals. Being a cop in liberal dominated (40+ years of liberal policies in Oakland) city is a thankless job.

So I just moved to California, I noticed some things.

First of all, the taxes are outrageously high. The highest I've ever seen or heard of. Now, you'd think that means they'd do something with that money. Let's see what I've observed...

-The worst public transportation that I've ever seen or heard of
-The worst police force that I've ever seen, I've heard of Russia though
-The worst roads that I've ever seen or heard of, and I've been to Mexico 6 times and Africa twice
-The worst DMV that I've ever seen or heard of
-The worst leaders that I've seen in this country
-The worst driving laws that I've ever seen or heard of, to a ridiculous extent
-The most crime that I've ever seen or heard of

I am 99% sure that California doesn't take in all this money so that they can do something with it to try and help people. They take enough money to set up the power to make sure they never have to help anybody. Just a bunch of power-hungry jerks that can sit around all day collecting paychecks.

I also noticed that everybody here is afraid of the government. But, for their lives. I've been told over and over to avoid the government and avoid the police because they kill people and get away with it. And what's on the news? Cops killing people and getting away with it. And there's GANGS? What? I thought we eliminated gangs in the 70's and 80's when people started to carry concealed weapons. But no, no concealed weapons in this state, so there's fucking GANGS. GANGS. Are you kidding me? This place is ridiculous. They have gun laws so that instead of offending criminals with a little bit of doubt or fear you have people afraid of their own government and GANGS. GANGS! ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS WITH THE GANGS?!

GANGS ONLY EXIST IN AREAS WHERE GUNS ARE BANNED. THEY HAVE A MONOPOLY ON POWER WHEN YOU BAN GUNS YOU FUCKING MORONS. California could open a history book to any page and learn a lot.

As a native Californian, I would like to welcome you to our glorious workers paradise. Here in California, you get to experiance on a daily basis the joys that institutionalized liberalism brings to your daily life.

Seriously...sounds like you decided to move to Los Angelas. Had you asked any reasonable Californian before hand, they would have told you to stay away. If I wasn't underwater on my mortgage, I would sell and move out of state (probably Idaho as Arizona is too fracking hot).

Is it just me, or is this an incredibly inappropriate "negotiation tactic" for the police chief to use? It amounts to threatening his own customers (the citizens who require the police to safeguard them) to pay up or else.

That's how I see it.

But you can't 'terrorize' taxpayers into paying more by cutting administration expenses or fringe benefits etc.

It was not to long ago that Oakland PD was the lowest paid for in the state. They were facing hiring issues because of the reputation of the city itself. One way to combat this was to up the pay and benefits packages to attract prospective recruits. Being a cop in Oakland is about has fun as being a cop in Richmond, CA or Compton back in its hay day in the news media.

Then again could the city council of Oakland justify its pension plan or that of any city bureaucrat compared to the level of challenge and work done by police and first responders on daily basis? The answer is a big fat no.

Oakland is suffering from it's liberal leadership. Clearly some right-wing policies could fix things there. Clearly they are spending too much and are overtaxed, another round of tax cuts will help. Also, they don't have enough guns to defend themselves from the criminal element. Maybe they could have a tax credit for people that buy guns? We need to flood Oakland with guns-because then it will be safer, right? :)
