Hello.
I have seen a lot of site with guide of O/C, but I don`t know what to do. I read something in Tom`s,that said that I have to STICK something to the motherboard to O/C the duron. I have thought that with the a7v, I just have to connect the bridges L1 in the CPU and tweak the clock speed in the bios...is that true, or is more difficult than that?? please, tell me the steps that I have to made in order to (finally) O/C my Duron 700 in an asus A7V.

Every duron 700 + gat get to 1ghz?? (with the default voltage settings)

Thanks a lot

Wah! you've been mislead bud.

Firstly, the revision of the A7V without jumpers is very rare.. so I think you've got all you need.

Secondly, there is NO gurantee in overclocking, ever.
My 700 does 1ghz, but barely.. that's with an Alpha, and paste.

G'luck.

Tom has several articles regarding the A7V. One is the voltage mod for letting you get more than 1.85v on the A7V. This is not necessary. THe other article discusses how to modify early revisions of the board so that it would have DIP switches to adjust the multiplier. Chances are, your board already has these DIP switches and you do not need to do this.

All you need to do to OC using the A7V is connect the bridges on the CPU, install it, and then adjust the multiplier using the DIP switches (by the IDE connectors) and the voltage and FSB using either the BIOS or the other set of DIP switches (located near the CPU socket).

But, I heard that the A7V has Jumperfree in the bios..why I have to change the clock speed in the Dip switches??, also, the early boards comes without the dip switches??, but now, all the boards have it???

thanks

Multiplier:
Rev. 1.01 versions with sound do not have the DIP switches for multiplier. Not sure about 1.0. Pre-release versions and Rev. 1.02 and up do have the DIP switches.

FSB and voltage:
On all revisions of the A7V, these can be changed using either the BIOS or the DIP switches by the CPU socket. The DIPs are used if you have jumperfreemode off. The BIOS is used to adjust these settings by default. In other words, no you do not need to mess with jumpers to adjust the FSB.

I saw thta the A7V is a Jumperfree Motherboard, does this mean that I cna control the clock and the FSB in the bios menu or I am rong??.
Also, what is the different betwen a OEM and retail cpu??

thanks

Yes, you can adjust these from the BIOS. You are correct.

The difference between an OEM an retail CPU is that the OEM CPU does not come with documentation, heatsink/fan, or 3 year warranty.

With the newest revision, I think you should be able to adjust multipliers in the BIOS somewhere, otherwise you're stuck with the DIP switches.

Let me say again:
FSB and voltage can be adjusted in the BIOS for ALL revisions of the A7V. Yes, you *can* do it by DIP, but it is not necessary. It is only an option for those who rather not use the BIOS to adjust the settings.

DIP switches must be used for multiplier in all but the most recent revision of the board.

Summary:
Some settings can be made in the BIOS, but multiplier usually needs to be changed by DIPs, unless you have one of the newer versions of the board. This means that for most versions of the board, some settings will be done in the BIOS, while others (ie multiplier) have to be set using the DIP switches.

thanks.

the Asus A7v is a stable and a good motherboard??

If you connect the L1 bridges badly, you can erase the marks and try over again (if you are using a pencil).

A7V good and stable board? Its definitely stable. I've had mine running since November 9, 2000 without a single reboot. Its a pretty decent board. It can just be a bit hard to get setup, but with a little bit of effort, it can be done.

If you connect the L1 bridges wrong, just make sure you don't run the processor like that, erase them and fix them before starting it up, or you could fry your processor.

The A7V is definitely a good baord, and very stable.
