Looks like FRY's is replacing their k7s5a mobo's w/K7VTA3 in their combo deals.

how do u o/c the 1800+ on a k7s5a? is the cpu unlocked?

And anyone know how to o/c the 1800+ on the K7VTA3? (besides just pushing the fsb to 166mhz. and just pushing it to 166mhz = 1.9ghz = ~XP2300 speeds.)

btw-the K7VTA3/1800+ is $64.99 @Fry's (retail version of 1800+)

hm...no info on modding the k7vta3 for o/c.

only settings i see are bumping the fsb to 166mhz. dont see a way to set the multiplier.

guess i'm sticking to the k7s5a pro then???

need more input w/ this board!!!

here are my experiences:

i'm running it w/ a 2500+ barton (set 166/166 w/ onboard jumpers)
seems to undervolt to 1.6v(what aida+bios tells me) (stock is 1.65v)
voltages are all wrong (shows 3.3v as 1.6v)
temps are crazy w/ mbm5 (shows -55c; sensor 1, 77c; sensor 2)
temps are "correct" using aida/bios (dont know because mobo == crazy readings)

i'm idling around 55c, and prime 95 after 6 hrs = 65c

i also o/ced the fsb to 181mhz fsb using bios (allows fsb adjust by 1mhz)

not bad so far, but man.. temp readings are either right or ????

AkumaX,

so you can't set the multiplier with the K7VTA3? only the fsb?

have u tried the cpu mod, where you jumper the pins on the chip itself?

jedi, as far as i can see, there's no mult, only fsb up to 200 (i'm at 181 right now)

0roo0roo, there's gotta be a better pin mod guide.. if i wanted to change my default 11.5 to like 12.5 i'd have to wire mod like six wires?? pretty excessive

btw, here's the problem i'm facing right now:

since im @ 181, sandra 2003 is reporting my pci bus as 45mhz!~!!!! that means 181/4, shouldn't the pci divider be @ 1/5??? i'm not sure, but that would mean even w/ choosing 166/166, sandra reports the pci bus as 41mhz... anyone have a program that would correctly report the pci bus speed???

Bump I need more info on this board as well.

What OC options does the cheepoman bios add for the K7S5A?

the main thing is it lets you give o/cing options from:

cpu/mem

100/100
103/103
112/112
124/124
133/133
133/166
138/138
143/143
147/147
150/150
160/120
160/160
166/166
200/200

i've done 150/150 in bios no probs. 160, 166, and 200 are impossible to do in bios. you can do 166/166 using speedfan 4.09

it also gives you better ram timings

whether its 6 or 1 wires, its about the same pain, u gotta take it all off and stick damned u shaped wires into the socket holes. :)

This new board. Is it KT333 based? I know the K7S5A Pro was Sis based. I wonder if there's any sort of significant performance advantage just in that switch from SiS to Via (assuming both boards had PC2100 say, so that the KT333 doesn't have the memory speed advantage).

Pretty crappy experience when I bought this combo at Fry's. I went to the checkout with a picture of the black label that has the stepping on it, and the words DLT3C JIXHB circled. I asked the cashier if she could give this sheet to the person in the back and try to find me a matching CPU. It probably took me more than 10 minutes to explain it to first the cashier, then I know that she didn't explain it correctly to the person in the back. She came back with a CPU and said "No wonder the lady in the back couldn't find your JIXHB, this is the last 1800+". BLARG! Ok, I thought whatever so I bought it. A little while later I call them up: "Any 1800+ combos left?" "Yes." BASTARDS! :|

yeap, fries is like ?!?!!? most of the times, so dont waste your time with them. regardless of whether its jiuxb or jiuhb, if youre using the k7vta3 you wont reach the true potential of either of them :)

but as for performance, if youre gonna choose between the sis735 or the kt333 w/ both using pc2100 ddr ram (essentially turning the kt333->kt266a), its still gonna be much better than the sis735. also, for what i could tell on my own the kt333 is much MUCH more stable than the k7s5a.. anything is more stable than that... but then again the sis735 uses both pc133 and pc2100, so if you had leftover sdram then its fine, but since ddr is pretty much the standard, i'd try to stay away from the k7s5a... (i've built many combos w/ k7s5a, about 50% of them had problems, but im using the k7vta3 and even w/ my o/cing, it seems pretty damn stable...)

but no one here still answered my question: when you choose 166/166, is the pci divider @ 1/4 (== 41.5mhz) or @ 1/5 (==33mhz)??? sandra is still reporting 41.5mhz, but i have no other way of confirming...

lol, yea you just buy 1800+ retail so you can see the stepping through the plastic, and return it without opening if its wrong. asking employees for stepppnig is foolish.

yeap, everytime i get a cpu from there i stare at the cpu like its some sort of diamond.. and the cashier sits there and wonders what i do :p (i'd be screaming "oh YAY its a ayjha (tbird 1.4)" or "w00t w00t, sl52x (celeron 766 -> 1288)"

I was gonna do that, but didn't want to waste the time of constantly asking them to bring me a different one if it wasn't JIXHB. Didn't think it would be that hard for them to freaking understand.

no no no... its REALLY hard for them to understand. you CANT work at frys if you DO know what steppings are... they are required to have blank face looks for most if not all queries...

Sandra reports 41mhz for PCI bus for me also. (1/4x multiplier)

That is kinda strange, anyone else got more input on this?

is running PCI at 41mhz all the time bad?

Is the AGP locked or what's the multiplier on the AGP? 1/5?

OCing noob here.

41 is really bad, let alone 45 :Q

usually the highest i would go would be like 35-37, but no where past 40

i'm hoping sandra's just reporting it wrong, because if they truly support 166fsb, then they would take the rest of the peripherals out of spec

the agp's not locked, but it should be in spec (if its @ 133mhz, then the divider's @ 1/2, @ 166mhz, it should be at 2/5)

sandra's also showing agp @ 83mhz (166 * 1/2), pci @ 41mhz (166 * 1/4)

pci should be @ 133mhz 1/4, and @ 166mhz 1/5, but showing @ 166mhz 1/4....

Update:

I just downloaded the newest vesrion of sisoft sandra standard edition 2004 and it reports it at 33mhz PCI. w00t

But the voltages are still totally messed up and my temps are still ridiculously high.

I'm running a 1800+ t-bred at 333mhz fsb with the retail hs. That gives me 1910mhz and it's at 58C idle, up to 62C under 100% load with prime95.

adia32 gives me the same number, as does my bios.

Any ideas about how to make it cooler? Running at normal 1.53ghz speeds still gives me about 55C idle.

I was really excited about everyone saying that the t-breds run a lot cooler, maybe in the 40-45C range using stock cooling. I guess maybe some chips perform worse than others?

Which BIOS revision does your guys' board come with? Does it come with the latest? Haven't had a chance to hook mine up yet so I can't say what mine came with (I know it didn't come with raid :( hehe).
