NYU or LMU or Syracuse?

I have these three options for my freshman year of college next year: New York University, Loyola Marymount University, or Syracuse University.

I am pretty sure I want to double major in film and philosophy, and eventually end up making films or owning my own advertising agency. I have no real experience in making films besides some fun little things I did for school as projects. So I don't really have a portfolio. Money's not really a factor as all three are gonna cost about the same after scholarships etc.

If anyone has any experience with one of these schools could you please give me some advice?

If by level you mean reputation then no they aren't, but I'm not sure that should be the most important factor here.

well one concern I have is because NYU's film program is highly regarded that I might not be able to be a film major having no portfolio.

that's a good point... i have no experience with any of those 3 schools. but having already graduated and whatnot... my advice would be not to pick a school based on a certain major.

that said, do you have any numbers from NYU regarding admissions statistics? their website seems to indicate that you don't need a portfolio... they look more at interest? having gone through the admissions process for a very competitive major in my undergrad career (several times!), i would say i firmly believe that if you have the will and the talent, you'll get in (eventually).

finally, keep in mind that you can always transfer if you fail to get into the film program and you're still set on that path.

right now I am liking LMU over NYU. I know NYU is a great school for these two subjects but i'd be 1 of a 5000 class at a school with no campus. LMU has an awesome campus, is a jesuit private school, and only has 1600 or so in the freshman class. I think I really need a community and campus, but am I overvaluing these things?

No campus? NYC is the campus, more specifically, the East Village & Union Square (and surrounding areas, depending on how adventurous you are). That beats the pants off of most run-of-the-mill college campuses. Then again, if you're not a "city person", there's no point in my trying to convince you.

Community and campus are really important. LA has great weather most of the year, and LMU has a wonderful campus. NYU is more highly regarded though. Really, I don't think you can make a bad decision, it really comes down to what you want more.

If you're going into journalism or thinking about going into journalism, go to syracuse... they have the best journalism school in the entire country (very hard to get into though).

Well I do live in Seattle (not a suburb, right in the city) but for some reason I am thinking a whole campus and community would be better than even the greatest city on earth for a college experience.

i worked right by NYU -- it's a great place. and having no campus should not sway you. there's union square, washington square park, etc. -- a lot of students hang out around there.

NYU has one of the best philosophy graduate programs in the country. Combine that with an equally prestigious film school and you have a willing combination.
