Probably because NY got handed gabillions of dollars for anti - terrorist ops and no way to spend it all! What a better way than to expand it's ops to another country and show the support and american spirit in Iran.

haha Yeah I know... I think they goofed ... Maybe they will open one up there next? :)

I think they should have used the money to beef up security in other states personally but... hey! In god we trust right? What do we care where the green backs go?

If I understand it correctly, NYPD has been international for some time.

After 9/11, they vowed that it would never happen again, and since the federal intelligence agencies weren't getting the job done, they decided to do it themselves.

At least, that's the way the story was told to me.

The linked article also mentions the NYPD already having branches in England, Germany, France and Canada. I'm sure the OP meant to complain about the wastage of tax payer dollars there as well. It must have slipped his mind.

This just seems messy in terms of overlap with federal agencies. Seems like the FBI or CIA should be doing this and passing on information to the NYPD if relevant.

That's what should be happening, I agree. Federal agencies barely even talk or share information with each other, though. They probably share with state and local agencies even less, unless they need something.

They've had foreign liason officers for quite some time. They share intelligence with other major metro police organizations since terror organizations targetting one are usually involved in targetting others.

Seems silly to me, but I've met NYPD and Chicago PD officers in Afghanistan, on assignment to teach, coach and mentor Afghan police.
