This applies to every single police department in this entire country. We're ready for a full overhaul - from how their big daddy bosses get elected all the way down to how officers are selected.

I'm not surprised.

I'm 31, short white dude who has lived in Queens almost all of his life. I work in Soho, which is a trendy area full of expensive boutiques and massive superstores. Lots of wealthy folk here.

Monday night (Halloween), I was heading to the welding studio. I walked to the local train station, and was stopped by a cop 20 feet from the train station. He told me no one's getting in because of the parade, and I politely pointed out that people are leaving, I'm only going two stops, and trying to walk 20 blocks across the parade would be brutal if not impossible.

He tells me "You can afford a cab to work every day, you can afford to take one now" and smirked at me. Like I'm rich. Fucking nerve.

I consider myself REALLY lucky to be a white guy in a city full of disgusting cops who pull shit like the ones in the OP's article. I don't have much to fear from em, but the stories I hear from my non-white friends make me fear every cop.

One called me a beloved patriot and searched me for drugs in a shitty neighborhood once, that was funny. Another time I got stopped outside a Dunkin Donuts by an unmarked car with detectives, and SWORE they were just stopping for donuts til they searched me.

Since when do you need to have an ID to walk around? Now I can understand needing positive identification before being released after being arrested, but her friend (who produced ID) wasn't even arrested. So it would seem she was arrested for not having an ID on her, which is just stupid.

Tickets were being issued. Without ID an issued ticket is essentially issued to air.
The police can hold you until your identity is confirmed.

Ah yes, I skimmed over the bit where it said they both got tickets. The outrage is over the length of the stay, not over the ID itself. I was confused.


I think a policeman's salary should be docked by $5000/year for every douchebag moment (such as this). All police activity should be audio recorded and will be used to determine the douchebagginess of his/her actions. Failure to have the audio (because it magically "disappeared") is an instant $10k/year hit.

Sounds good to me :)

I'm glad she got arrested. WTF are you doing at a park at 3am? All parks are closed at that time.

Agreed. They were obviously planning to sell drugs or rob people. Probably threw the drugs and the body in the Hudson when they saw the cop car approaching. :mad:

Yeah, you can't throw anything into the hudson from there, she was probably at mid level of the park, and it's a good quarter mile to the water from there, across henry hudson parkway.

I know the feeling. Same shit happened to me, but for one night. I had a great time too. Being locked up is an experience everyone should experience at least once.

First, from the story, she is from out of town and wanted to head over to the River to see it since she had been too busy since she arrived to do so. She wanted to do so with her boyfriend cause people romantically involved try to usually do romantic things.

Second, they hadn't entered the park yet when the first cop car pulled up according to the article. The first cop warned them away stating that going into the park would be trespassing since it's closed. Which means they hadn't trespassed yet. Before the first cop car leaves though the second one with the hot head cop shows up and decides to ask for IDs. Upon her not having an ID then he issues tickets for trespassing and detains the girl. And goes to lengths by having her shipped to a different holding area to prevent her friends/boyfriend from coming back later with her ID to free her. Thus she has to spend more time in a cell. Why this douche bag did all this we can only wonder.

So when the judge learned of the tickets and circumstances it was thrown out and rightly so. They didn't commit any crimes as they DID NOT TRESPASS.

I know a few friends who have gotten tickets for being in NYC parks after closing. Giuliani tried to turn the city into Singapore and Bloomberg has continued the policy. In their defense I don't think that there was any other way to get it in under control.
