I expect this to expand to states that don't want to have a plague upon their residents, and the gulf between "low/moderate transmission" and "high/very high transmission" will continue to grow

Contrast that with Desantis and his actions down here. He's on the offensive in the covid war--on the side of covid.

As my brother the ICU nurse said about him: If you aren't going to help, at least get out of the way. Instead he's threatening pulling funding from schools that want to mask, and put in an exec order saying schools can't mandate masking. So much for "small government" where local counties can make decisions.

I'll be moving up north to a sane state in the next few years, we have a home realty business to wrap up and a kid in school (and it's a good school, which do exist even here in Florida!). I'll pay more in taxes and/or expenses but it'll be worth it to me. One of the few things I enjoy down here anymore is fishing the intracoastals and they are now so polluted I don't bother.

Don’t get how this is going to work. NY is going to put the burden on business staff to check the vaccine cards and they are expected to know who the card belongs too AND tell someone they don’t want their business?
Simply isn’t going to work the majority of times.

Matching state ID and vaccine card? Granted that is probably overkill. I see this move more symbolic right now, but I'd be delighted if it truly did hit the unvaccinated crowd and forced them to get a vaccine.

Most people in NY will use the Excelsior Pass app or the city's app. Likely only people from elsewhere will present the CDC cards.

This. Excelsior pass. Got mine, for businesses it's as simple as scanning a QR code to confirm. It's how a competent state government handles such things.

They seem to figure out stuff like id for buying alcohol, voting, driving, so should this be so hard that you have to act defeatist about it?

Just from managing small businesses the worst thing you want to do is pick a fight with someone over something before they even enter the place. Then anyone who works at a medium sized or larger business is going to get flooded with poor customer survey scores which I have fired people for in the past. No big business is going to turn off their surveys for NYC only.
Plus many places simply aren’t going to be staffed to do this easily but maybe a Gym or Food place that you sit at would be easier.

One problem I've not encountered in NYC is a lack of will by service establishments to tell assholes what to go do with themselves.

As of last week, NYC was showing 71% vaxxed, "at least one dose" meaning full vax is probably around 65%. While that is certainly above the national average (~52%), considering NYC population density and its history with COVID, it kind of sucks. The CA suburban county I live in is ~80% vaxxed.

Almost anything which would improve that is something I would support.

Several places in my neighborhood were already requiring proof of vaccination to sit inside before this and they seemed to handle it just fine - no problems as far as I could see.

I think this is a great idea. You'll never reach the hard core anti-vaxxers but surveys have shown a significant percentage of people don't plan on getting it but would if it were required by work or to do something they wanted to do.

Population density doesn't really matter in regards to COVID though - this was a misnomer from early on in the pandemic.

I did talk to those workers about it when I first encountered it, actually! I was pleasantly surprised they were doing it and wanted to know how it was going. At least at that point there had been zero problems. I suspect this was helped by the fact that they could offer outdoor seating to those who weren't vaccinated but I think that was more due to the fact that most customers didn't know going in that they would need to show proof of vaccination.

This is really not a difficult thing to implement and really we should all be about finding the biggest sticks possible to whack the vaccine hesitant with right now. Make it so they can't go anywhere but the grocery store and back home.

The Anti-Vaxxers already offer fake COVID vaccination cards for this purpose. This might put a dent in stopping unvaccinated guests from dining indoors in NYC, but they're not going to stop everybody.

Doesn't really matter in the case of NYC whether it was density, travel vectors, or other factors. NYC has a bad history with COVID, and it really ought to be on the leading edge of vaccination rates because of that. It isn't.

One thing I'm reading is that there is a category of unvaccinated who are simply too lazy to bother with it. They probably think the death rates seem low, they are not that old, so why bother with the hassle. I also read that this group tends to be apolitical and not bother to vote either. They seem like low hanging fruit here. We just have to make it more of a hassle for them not to be vaccinated than to go get vaccinated.

The goal isn't to stop people so committed to not getting vaccinated that they are willing to commit a federal crime, it's to irritate the lazy/hesitant remainder into being responsible.

So if NYC is 70% vaccinated now, if we can push the lazy/hesitant into getting vaccinated we can get to maybe 80% or even 85%.

Most people will fold and get vaccinated before doing this.

Look at Seoul and Tokyo. Both denser than NYC and are huge travel vectors. And, well, look at South Dakota, which is neither.

Regardless, I am not at all surprised that NYC is not at the forefront of vaccination because it has very large communities of the populations that are particularly reluctant to be vaccinated. Really, given its demographics its doing quite well and I'm not sure what more it could be doing. I mean the city literally has people going door to door signing people up for vaccinations, it has tents all over the city staffed all day willing to give people a shot at a moment's notice, etc. Because I was vaccinated in CA the city didn't have a record of me getting a shot and I got a personal call asking if I had and/or if I would sign up for one.

One thing I'm reading is that there is a category of unvaccinated who are simply too lazy to bother with it. lol - it's vaccine percentage is higher for those minorities than Texas. I guess that means Texas is a HUGE shithole, right?

I am headed to NYC shortly and we will be eating hot pot, I'll bring my vax cards as the Asian community seems to be more strict with precautions from my experiences in this area (restaurant based)

Don't forget the worse crime rates, the overall shitty sprawl and terrible city planning and pedestrian/bike unfriendly infrastructure that make Houston just a kind of crappy place if you actually want a city experience.

I've never been to Houston but not because I have anything against it, I just can't think of any reason I would want to travel to Houston. It's weird that it's such a large city but is so completely forgettable.
