Was thinking about how cabbies in Manhattan don't like taking passengers to Brooklyn because they can't make money on the long trip back to the city. Some people say you should tip the cabbies "extra" for this trip back they have to take.

My question lies in this "extra". Is there really an extra? I tip about 1$ for any fare below $10, and $2 for any fare below $20. It should follow that i'd tip $3 for fares $20-30. I sometimes tip up to $5 for fares in this range, for the reason mentioned before.

Should I not be doing this? Is the cabbie being greedy by not wanting take customers to brooklyn? After nights of late drinking in Manhattan, I've actually found that some cabbies will not let you in their cab if you tell them you're going to brooklyn. I heard that NY law states a cabbie must take you anywhere in NYC you wish to go. This law is detriment to the cabbies' abitlity to make money in cases when the customer wishes to go to places outside manhattan. Why is this law legal? Why is it in place?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that law because I'm sure that at least once it's been the case that a cabbie has taken me to Brooklyn contrary to his best interest at the time. So i'm happy that it's in place, but it doesn't seem fair. The environment is such that the cabbie would make more money if he only took trips within manhattan, why would the law force him to take passengers to other boroughs?

Last time I visited NYC, my friends called some 'homegrown' taxi service which took me from one place in Brooklyn to another.
