Need to find a nice place for an important birthday celebration... it can be just a restaurant but if there's something "extra" (ie. a sunset cruise - but that's been done with the group) then all the better. Will be for 20+ ppl (all adults)...

I'd deeply appreciate any recommendations for in and around the city. If it's just a website with recommendations, I'll take that too.

With 20 people you're gonna have to rent a private room in a restaurant.

EDIT>> well it turns out she would rather have a small gathering (< 10) for her 30th. Makes it easier for me but suggestions still welcome. Price range can be like $50pp or so...

Blue Owl on 2nd ave lets you rent out a private room, i think its 75pp open bar for an hour. you call them up, and day of, they text you a password to get into the "secret room" they were doing that when they first opened...dunno if they still are.

Ah yes; NYC. One of the few places in the US where you actually have to rent a private room at a ridiculous price for a small party of 20 people that just want to have a nice time.

Most other major cities, you can go to the local steakhouse or even an Applebee's or TGIF's and just show up with 20 people and get all the space you want and great service.

Why people continue to live there is beyond me.

You can't just show up at a steakhouse or an applebees without at least making a reservation. and every place thats capable of holding 20 people will be more than accomodate a party of 20. you don't HAVE to get a private room. and you don't' have to pay a ridiculous price for a private room. if you want privacy, you can head to any club, get bottle service and be fine. and bottle service, when split up between multiple heads isn't even that much.

I would definitely check out churrascaria plataforma. It's a great Brazillian BBQ place. The one in Tribeca looks a lot nicer than the one in midtown. I've had a couple of parties there. It is a blast.

On Third? I live right near there :)

i third that.
Worst bar ever...ok, maybe Sutton Place is worse.

I'd say if it's in the near future with the great weather we've been having, something outside would be fun, maybe with a great view...something like the Boat Basin (very casual), Rare View (grab burgers downstairs...somewhat casual), or Water Taxi Beach (extremely casual) or Rise in the Ritz downtown (not so casual). Maybe that's just my tastes, but I love outdoor bars in NYC in the summer. Almost all of them have plenty of room and for 10 people shouldn't require advance notice.
