NYC passes ban on supersized sugary drinks

To the people listing the ways it'll be circumvented, it's probably more about casually reducing intake than it is about absolutely stopping people from drinking over 16oz... People will drink in 16oz increments instead of 32 or 64oz increments. I doubt the people enacting that law were like man this is air tight obesity slam dunk. That said I think it's dumb. At least it's not particularly harmful (there's not going to be a 32oz black market) and probably easily reversible when people come to their senses.

Sadly the body does not come with an instruction manual. If it did it would probably say avoid drinking large amounts of sugar water. If you are determined to cause yourself harm ultimately nobody can stop you. This law is just trying to make it slightly less likely that it will happen while ordering lunch. Sure you can cheat the system and order 5 drinks, but who are you really cheating at that point?

Sure you can. By FAR the cheapest route is to pick up 2 liters of diet mountain dew or whatever. I chug them sometimes at work right out of the bottle. You get strange looks, but who cares. Use a cup if you must. Normally I drink the free coffee my work provides since it has some added health benefits over diet soda.

I gave them all up. I drink brewed tea with splenda which is enough like sugar for my tastes. I keep the sweetness down though because it masks the other qualities of the beverage. The tendency of humans to acquire all the calories they can based on our biological heritage applies to soft drinks, but the medical fact is that our bodies don't know how to respond to liquid calories. We deposit the excess as fat but it does nothing to quell appetite. They're fairly evil.

This is what I do too actually, and yes you will get "got enough soda there?" remarks at work even from people that drink 6+ cans a day I switched from diet mountain dew to diet white birch beer (love that shit and it's only a dollar) though.

I'm fine with it. I'd be fine if they imposed more restrictions of food excesses. It's clear the majority of the people can't make proper choices when it comes to diet and having meals that are 2000 calories as options isn't helping.

I'd also be fine if we just increased the insurance costs on people who were excessively overweight or smoked.

Maybe the Govt should start to subsidize healthy foods so it wasn't so much more expensive to eat well.

Might as well close all restaurants in the country. People can't regulate the amount of chicken wings they eat, or the serving size of a steak, or a proper serving of french fries.... close them all. Limited healthcare resources you know. We can all just eat 4oz of boiled chicken and raw broccoli for dinner every night.

We didnt have an internet, but I was around 30 years ago and believe me people did turn into know-it-all assholes any time politics or serious news came up. You'd be amazed how ballsy people can get in real life any time they think they have a cause.

I agree that sugary drinks are at the heart of our obesity crisis... But I detest the idea of limiting their sale at any capacity. Shameful use of power and I hope the people of NY as well as the beverage companies fight this with all of their heart.
