Ban everything above a certain size so people have to buy two or three.

the liberal sheep will be on to defend this in no time flat.

This is an example of why we can't have any political discourse in this country without taking it to down the grade school level. Really all you have to add to this news article is this juvenile divisive garbage?

I agree that sugary drinks are at the heart of our obesity crisis... But I detest the idea of limiting their sale at any capacity. Shameful use of power and I hope the people of NY as well as the beverage companies fight this with all of their heart.

I question the ultimate usefulness of this since many places offer free refills and that will just expand to counter the 16 oz rule.

There is nothing stopping you from buying a 5 lb bag of sugar and using just enough water to dissolve it and drinking it all as often as you wish.

Unless the person is making Kool-Aid...who is going to do this?

I don't know how I feel about the ban. People will just go from getting a large combo to getting a combo with a 16oz drink + another 160z drink at the Drive Thru and people inside the restaurant will just use the Free Refills.

How about charge for the refill, heh!

Feel good legislation.

People will just drink more smalls. In the end they will probably consume slightly more sugar. OR, the drink industry will figure out a way to insert more sugar into their product.

How about keeping the government out of the private sector.

Terrible, but well intentioned, pseudo solution to a real problem. Rather than limiting to a certain size that people can easily get around anyway, why not focus on educating the masses as the .gov did in regards to cigarettes? That would have a better impact IMO.

And why not push for alternative drink choices other than fizzy sugar water (soda) and sugar water (powerade, the fake lemonade they have in these machines)? And/or have sugar content labeling like they do with calories on the menu? At least they list the calories on the menu in my state.

Government should educate rather than force things like this where applicable. I wouldn't be surprised if the per capita consumption goes up a little as people will now think they are getting hosed and consume more to make up for it.

Sadly the body does not come with an instruction manual. If it did it would probably say avoid drinking large amounts of sugar water. If you are determined to cause yourself harm ultimately nobody can stop you. This law is just trying to make it slightly less likely that it will happen while ordering lunch. Sure you can cheat the system and order 5 drinks, but who are you really cheating at that point?

Does this mean we might see both R and D people holding up pro choice signs throughout NYC?

This is just stupid by every sense of the word.

I don't particularly like the idea either but people have sure as hell shown they can't regulate their soda/sugar intake themselves. I really wouldn't give a crap if healthcare wasn't a limited resource and they end up sucking down a jumbo size of that too.

They can't regulate their own reproduction either, can they?
