NYC/NJ - Dogs on Mass-Transit

Anybody know what the policy is for taking dogs on NYC subways, and NJ Transit trains?
I'm considering getting a dog (Golden Retriever size) and want to know what obstacles I'm going to run into in terms of getting around since I don't own a car.

I've seen people with dogs on NYT but I think they are banned on NJT. I know bikes are banned on NJT too FWIW.

I don't think non-seeing-eye-dogs are allowed in the subway in NYC. I've never seen anyone take one into the subway. I have seen people take small ones in hand bags on the subway though.
