IMO, this is a disgrace.

Homes still flooded, people missing, power out, refugees in the same hotels the athletes would need to stay in, the transit system crippled -- and the mayor is going to make residents have to deal with the chaos of a major sports event?

I think it's a highly questionable decision to hold the marathon and not postpone it. For all the reasons you mention plus the use of resources (generators, police and EMT's, and event volunteers etc.) that could better be deployed for rescue/cleanup efforts. Also, everywhere seems so crowded with traffic this seems like it will further aggravate that.

Bloomberg speaks of the economic benefit from the marathon, but how businesses will still be out of power or otherwise closed (no gas to get to work etc.) Sunday and cannot benefit anyway?

I realize Bloomberg had a short time frame to make the decision, and that some marathoners are already in NYC, the rest may not have been able to change their flights. It may be he either didn't expect this many problems, or he thought they would be fixed soon. That looks highly doubtful right now.

I wonder if he had a do-over if he would still stick to his decision?

Yea, every person signed up to run should just do 26.2 miles of trash pickup. I'd feel like shit running that race in those circumstances.

Might as well have had a marathon during the battle of Falujah. Tour de Faluh!

I guess it cancelled. NYC people are really upset. No telling what could happen to the runners. On top of that I think a Nor easter is in the making for next week like a huge mother

When Mayor Bloomberg was asked before the hurricane about the inmates on Rikers Island he said don't worry, they're not getting out. The man seems just a tad out of touch.

In the end, good decision. But it should have been made days ago to avoid more of a mess in an already crazy place.

I have to say I think going on with the marathon is a good idea, why not? If those people want generators, why not pay for it? Or is everyone else supposed to pay for their mess?

BTW motherfuckers from New York should be goddamn ashamed for comparing the damage of Staten Island to that of Katrina and NO and the rest of Louisiana. It is no where near as bad as what went down in the South with Katrina, fucking North Eastern asshole Yankees always using hyperbole and over exaggerating their importance in the world.

I don't care either way if the marathon is run or not but I find it amusing that there was such an uproar over the marathon but the Giants/Steelers game will go on as scheduled.

I also find it funny that an area in need of funding for rebuilding will turn away the estimated $350,000,000 the marathon was expected to bring in.

Given the last-minute nature of the cancellation, if I were a foreign runner or from across the country and I got stuck with plane tickets and hotel reservations I'd be pissed.

Postponing seems like the appropriate action, I was really surprised when they said they were going through with it. Running the race, along with all the resources needed to do it seems crazy considering all the challenges facing the city.

Sandy's storm surge damage may be consistent with a Cat3. It did a lot more than a typical Cat1. Unless you've seen the aerial photos... and man they are devastating, don't jump the gun on how bad it was or wasn't.

I was saying it wasn't nearly so bad too, until I actually saw the extent of it. Sandy may not top Katrina, but it IS comparable.

Staten Island is 1/3rd the size of New Orleans and New Orleans wasn't the only part of LA that was wrecked. To compare the damage is nonsense.

Not really having a bad day, just annoyed by hyperbole.

Not to mention the death toll was easily 10x's that of Sandy.

you can see the ocean and still some of the first floors of near by buildings. I've seen most the pictures, Staten Island has significant damage, but to compare it to Katrina? That's some exaggerated nonsense.

btw I realize those pictures don't tell the whole tale, but from everything I've seen it's no where close simply due to the size of Staten Island vs the size of NO and the surrounding area that was simply leveled.

Honestly, I don't know why you are so worked up. I haven't seen anyone say Sandy was worse than Katrina. It's not a misery competition.

I was fine with the marathon as a life affirming gesture. I am fine with it being to early to be affirming life. I believe that good people try to do what they think is best at the time they make those decisions and I think looking back is easy compared to seeing what is right for tomorrow. The storm was a tragedy and tragedy is tragedy because it brings tragedy. People who are dealing with feelings of tragedy do and say irrational things. The nature of tragedy is that we feel feelings that are tragic for our sanity. Tragedy is what happens when tragedy strikes and we can't disconnect our egos from what we feel. It's a time for paralytic sadness and uncontrollable rage. The strength of your compassion will depend on the depth to which you know your own pain.
