First of all, cell phones aren't more expensive than landlines and she probably also has a landline. The government gives cheap landlines out to poor people. The outrage is in the fact that she isn't using the money from the cell phone bill to get out of welfare.

We're also talking about NYC here. Yes, it has been raining the past month, but you can always hang your clothes indoors. When I was a kid, we used to hang clothes indoors. We didn't spend money on drying clothes. If you're counting pennies, you should find every way to save the pennies. Finally, new clothes are more expensive than second hand clothes. You can buy used instead. The kid is 15 years old. He should not be at the age of outgrowing his clothes. When I was 15, my allowance for clothes was two 15 dollar jeans and five 3 dollar Tshirts every year.

How do you know what her clothing budget for her kid is? How do you know how her apartment is set up and if it is amenable for hanging clothes drying lines in it? How do you know she has a land line as well?

Like I said, you're speaking from ignorance and filling in the gaps in the story with your own invented circumstances so you can be outraged.

If you're pinching every penny, you set up your apartment to allow a line. If you're lazy, you go to the laundromat and spend your welfare checks there.

/facepalm

If we as a society have decided we want to have a welfare system (and we have), we will not make it that 54 year old diabetic women must lug piles of wet laundry multiple New York City blocks to save a few dollars in order to qualify... because we are not fucking crazy.

Ya know, when they said we where all created with certain unalienable rights independent of government, that also means we have the right to not play wheelbarrow for those that decide to perform no other task for society than being a speed bump.

If I were a New Yorker, the outrage would be that my state has the highest tax burden of any state, and with all that money the state can only afford $150/month in welfare. That's fucking pathetic.

Mmmmmm government cheese!

What a miserable existence.

Times get tough, using it to get on your feet? Sounds good.

Years and years and not doing anything for yourself? You deserve your rung in society.

This, I hate people who live off the system. They are taking away money that could be spent in better ways.

They should limit welfare to something like 6months Max.

New York City... maybe the people who can't afford to live there should get the hell out. No need for tax payers to prop up a city whose workers need welfare to survive.

Look around you. In severe economic recessions, a six month unemployment stint is not uncommon. It isn't "living off the system" when there simply may not be any jobs in your area/region. Besides, IIRC you do have to show proof that you are attempting to find employment.

Looks like you are looking for someone to bash, and as a typical Republican, focus on those least fortunate.

Family plans start at 60 dollars while individual plans start at 30.

Did you read the part where her daughter pays for her phone service? It costs $9.99 to add another member to a family plan.

If her daughter was paying for herself, it would be 30 bucks. If she wanted to apply for a family plan, it would start at 60 bucks.

Well I just used 6 months as an example. I am not an expert analyst yet, but the amount of time you can use welfare should be much lower. Are you telling me you are searching for a job for 5 years and have yet to find one? I would then tell you you chose the wrong profession and go to the nearest McDonalds.

Also, if there are no jobs in your area, you could easily move to a new area.

Second, why the fuck do you have a cell phone if you're on welfare? Scrap that cell phone and use the money to buy food. I found the single mother who complained about dryer costs to be hilarious. She wants to count pennies, but doesn't hang her clothes on a line to save money. Finally, Louise Ellis epitomizes what is wrong with welfare. She is on welfare, yet she somehow manages to find the money to buy NEW clothes for her son. There are plenty of thrift stores that sell wearable used clothing. If you can afford to buy new clothes, you can afford to leave welfare.

Ketny Jean-Francois, a single mother of a 6-year-old boy, said she was frustrated when she noticed several weeks ago that the cost of using a dryer at her laundromat had gone up: a quarter used to buy 10 minutes, but now it buys only eight.

Ms. Jean-Francois, who lost her job as a home health aide last year

I could post about a couple of people, but clearly your too stupid and self righteous to get it.

So she wants to save money and she does so by... reading a magazine in the laundromat rather than washing and drying her own clothes by hand? There are billions of people who don't have access to a washer/dryer. What do they do? That's right, they use their hands and a line.

Also, if there are no jobs in your area, you could easily move to a new area.

As was already pointed out, the person in the article had only been out of work for 1 year, not five. Those who have experience working with the poor know that it is very common for a poor person to have a full-time job and still be well below the poverty level for their given area, especially if they have kids. These are the working poor, which are largely ignored in America when it comes to policy.

Simply applying at McDonalds doesn't work for a number of reasons. For starters, those are the kind of jobs that many work at while still needing welfare assistance. Second, the job market is flooded in these areas by people who are overqualified and need something just to make ends meat for a while. Such is economic recession.

Finally, moving is not always an option, especially if you have kids. Moving costs both time and money which the poor in many cases do not have. If you are single it is much easier. Poverty is a trap which is very difficult to get out of. Those who are truly 'stuck' in both a physical and literal sense aren't necessarily that way through their own fault. This is one of the most common misconceptions when it comes to the poor. Sure, there are some who are, but overall this is not the case.

You know, I actually have experience doing this. I have washed clothes in a sink before, and set them out to dry. A few observations: Machine washing is far more efficient in terms of time (even if you just sit on your arse reading a magazine), far more effective in terms of actually getting clothes clean (modern conveniences - progress!), and maybe even cheaper overall in terms of detergent (you will inevitably use more if you have to periodically drain/refill said sink or just to compensate for said inefficiency of handwashing lots of clothes). Even people in the third world have actual mechanical washing tubs or washboards to aid in washing clothes which our poor do not. This whole line of argument, railing against them for using a laundromat, seems to be a strawman. Most people here wouldn't begrudge the poor using a laundromat on occasion...

There needs to be some kind of criminal charge for being on welfare more than a year. Some kind of physical punishment or hard labor. Something to show these leaches that what they are doing is wrong and should stop immediately. Only when you let these leaches suffer the consequences of their stupidity and poor decisions will they change. Until that happens we will always have this problem or until we just say enough is enough, no more free shit, get off your ass and get a job.

The Democratic voting bloc who are enslaved to their dependence should be rounded up and shipped out to a farm in the middle of the country. Feed yourselves.

Poor people suck at making money and then with what little they have they suck at using it wisely.
The article states she has diabetes, which I would call chronic.
I bet you a million bucks she's fat as sh*t, so she finds money for chips and crap. GUARANTEE it.
Laundry? Yeah, try going to a job interview looking and smelling like feet.
Nobody on welfare for 5 years is going to job interviews.
So should all the poor in the U.S. be rounded up and shipped out somewhere?
Only the really poor ones. Put them into labor camps to work off the welfare they collected for all those years. If they refuse to work, no Maury in the communal area and no Twinkies on Saturdays (Twinkie night).

EDIT: Yep, I clicked the article and no surprise she doesn't look like she's a runner.
