Here's a crazy statistic on why so many take a long commute in:
The 28.6% of residents in Nassau County that commute to jobs in NYC are bringing in 56% of the income earned in Nassau County.

I wonder what it is for Suffolk? :hmm: I'm actually Suffolk -> Nassau for work.

Yeah, no way the average in NYC is 35 minutes. It's gotta be closer to an hour. I am assuming they do mean all 5 boroughs when they say NYC though and not just Manhattan, since nobody actually lives in Manhattan.

Yea, only like 2 million people. Not too many.

some of my friends from Brooklyn take over an hour. i'm from jersey and it takes me 45-50 mins so yeah, something is fishy here.

Some people live in Manhattan and work in Manhattan. Some people live in Brooklyn and work in Brooklyn.

A little over 3 miles to work takes me 5-10 mins. If there's an accident, it may add 5 extra minutes. Even better is I get to go home for lunch which does save me some money.

Back when I was living in Orange County Calif, 11 miles would take 30-45 minutes on city streets or an hour jumping on the freeway during rush hours. I don't miss it one bit.

I lived in north Orange County and worked in south Orange county. 32 miles each way with traffic would take at least 65 minutes each way... and I drove a manual. I lasted about 4 months before I moved to be closer to work. I will always live close to my job. Driving is unneeded stress and a complete waste of time.

My commute is 64 miles each way. It usually takes 50 minutes to get to work. I enjoy it - beautiful views, great canyon roads in a good car, and I have a car to myself. Set cruise control to 87. Done.

My commute is 40 miles each way, but it's slogging through traffic on I-95. It takes me over an hour to get home. The self driving car can't get here soon enough.

under very limited criteria sure

I know people whos sub 10 mile commute takes an hour if they drive

my 53 mile commute takes 40 min

Unless you're driving 80mph the whole time and your office and house are literally on the highway, there's no way you're doing 53 miles in 40 minutes.

i do drive about 80
and 52 miles of it is highway

ive done it in under 30 minutes. 40 was close enough to what it normally takes

The 10% of residents in Suffolk County that commute to jobs in NYC are bringing in 21.4% of the income earned in Suffolk County.

Smaller % of commuters into the city because of distance obviously. But bringing in 21% by themselves... that's pretty high.

I was stuck in traffic for much of a 1hr20min drive yesterday (Sat afternoon). It got me thinking about self-driving cars and how much stress it would take away in those situations (auto-cruise would also). Then again, with self-driving cars, these accidents probably wouldn't occur in the first place. God it's so infuriating that these drivers suck so bad. 3 accidents on the Belt Pkwy in the same hour. And the rubbernecking is just as annoying.

Yeah the LIRR is stupid busy - "With an average weekday ridership of 337,800 passengers in 2014, it is the busiest commuter railroad in North America."

One way, my wife takes 10 minutes to drive to the station, another 45 minutes on the LIRR, then from Penn another 15 minutes on the subway to her office in Manhattan. The 45 minutes is not even that far east from Manhattan - many people do 60 minutes+. My wife does almost 3 hours a day roundtrip. Contrastingly, I just go downstairs to my office. Of course she makes double what I do too... not a stressful job, just a long commute. On the positive side, she was able to shift her hours so she does 8-4 and is home by 515pm.

Wifey makes double you?
What does she do, and what do you do?
