Years back on another forum, there was a guy complaining about a low level hum he could hear almost constantly. This was in a major metropolitan area with a lot of very heavy industry, railroads, marine traffic, road/truck traffic, underground mining activity and of course all the support industries like power plants. We all tried to offer suggestions based on known sound sources, but the guy rejected them all. He was sure it was something nefarious.

He died some years later.

They keep talking over the sound so it's hard to tell for sure but seems to be dominant around the 430hz range. Not really sure what would produce that frequency but I'm thinking it's some kind of large 3 phase motor and it's putting off a harmonic of sorts. I've heard similar sounds from industrial buildings like mines.

There's a repeated phenomenon of "The X Hum", where X is some town or neighbourhood. The story came up very recently about somewhere here, and it reminded me I've read that same story every decade or so.
