The Yankees will have to pay 8-9 million in "luxury tax" according to ESPN.

No way... I thought it would be at least 50 million. The threshold is around 100 million.

I think the threshhold is somewhere around 135.., and it's supposed to drop over the term of the CBA IIRC..

Baseball is for nerds. The only reason why New Yorkers are such baseball fanatics is because all their other sports teams suck.

But all the other New york teams have won their respective championships at least once since 1918.

How long before something is done about the finances in baseball? The game is just being ruined.
Didn't this come up about 6 months ago? 😀

I think it's funny that NY signed Lieber as insurance for 2004.

The thing that really got glossed over was international players. When they signed the CBA, they promised they were going to work something out in the offseason, but I never heard about it again. The Yankees went out and bought Matsui, so far nothing seems to have changed.

Edit
Didnt read the article doh... I remember that during negotiations that there was a proposal of a luxury tax similar to the NBA where for every million you were over you had to match in tax.

the nba has some serious luxury tax... in baseball.... that's like nothing!!

Well under contract for 2004 pitching wise, the Yankees have Contreras, Mussina, Wells, and Weaver. They also signed Lieber to keep him away from the Red Sox.

Stop paying $50 a ticket and buying merchandise and the salaries will go down.

I haven't gone to a MLB game since I was 10 years old. I am only a casual follower of the sport..mostly fantasy baseball... I don't even have a favorite team. Just a sports fan making a general comment on the state of the league. 🙂
