Go straight to Hong Kong, then take the bus or train up to ShenZhen.

It's probably best to catch a train from Hong Kong up to ShenZhen.

From the airport, you take the Airport Express train to Hong Kong station, change to Central, go to Kowloon Tong on the MTR and then change again to the KCR, which will take you to Lo Wu (ShenZhen border).

Probably a little less complicated is catch the City Flyer route A21 bus service from the airport to Hung Hom KCR station, then go straight up to Lo Wu.

thanks andy, i just wonder how long and how much is either method, and is shenzhen the last stop for both of these transportation methods... if it is, i wouldn't miss the stop would I.

how about macao, can I go to macao straight from the HK airport. I went to macao before from within HK while visiting HK, but that was like 20yrs ago when i was so little I dont remember anything.

I heard they're considering building a bridge from HK to Macao but in the meantime you'll have to take the boat.

Hong Kong is one of the easiest cities to get around in very fast without owning a car...i'd say its more efficient/easier than any U.S. city I've been too...(NYC included)...

edit: there's no way you'll miss the stop going to Shenzhen...you'll essentially be entering the motherland and will need to have your documents reviewed..

Method A:
AEL to Hong Kong station : HK$70, 20 mins
Interchange to Central MTR: 10 mins
MTR Central to Kowloon Tong KCR: HK$12, 20 mins
KCR Kowloon Tong to Lo Wu: HK$15, 30 mins

Method B:
City Flyer A21 Bus to Hung Hom KCR: HK$22, 25 mins
KCR Hung Hom to Lo Wu: HK$20, 40 mins

Method B is probably minimum fuss.

Lo Wu is the last station for the KCR, although there are dedicated trains that go up to GuangDong. Everything is marked clearly, and you will know when you get to Lo Wu because everyone else gets off. Make sure you catch the right train; the Lo Wu trains alternate with the Sheung Shui (Hong Kong side of the border) trains, so check the destination carefully before getting on.

You can't go directly to Macau from the airport. You need to go back into Hong Kong for that. From the Airport, take the A11 (HK$40) and change to ferry at Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan.

heh heh, AT FAQMan indeed.

what is kcr?

do you buy a fare from ticketing machines or what.

are attendants around the stations or within the transportation vehicle at all helpful, do they speak to what extent english, to what extent canto, or is it mand.

when i went to tokyo it was a bitch at first to learn between their triad of public phone types as ea. is from a different competitor, cards and change, and purchasing little subway tickets from machines took a few moments to figure out, it's not a flat fare, and you have to keep the ticket to use when u get off your destination and reinsert it into the exit turnstyle.

Stay away from La Guardia Airport!!! It is the worst airport I have ever been to out of about the 20 that I have seen!

I was there during the blackout.. and they cancelled all the flights on a whim and kicked us out of the terminal - even though some of our flights still went out with half the passengers. Then, they cancelled the next day... It was the only NY airport still not functioning the next day.

La Guardia SUCKS.

KCR = Kowloon-Canton Railway.

Buy fares from the automated machines at the station. If you are going to be in HK for a while, well worth your while to get an Octopus card. ALL public transport is paid for by Octopus, and you can use it instead of cash at places like McDonalds and 7-11.

You won't be able to find attendants at stations (without some difficulty), since everything is automated. Everything is written in both Chinese and English; any young person speaks English fine (but don't use me as an example....I was brought up in Australia). Everyone will speak at least Cantonese, but a progressively larger percentage of the population will speak and understand Mandarin as well.

Don't worry....everything is clearly marked.

-where should i exchange us dollar for chinese currency.... in HK before going into shenzhen, or at the stop at shenzhen station (do they have that ability set up)

also while in HK, before getting a train, can I shop for a Shenzhen hotel for decent rates at cubicles in the airport or the trainstation?

or should i from US, get the plane ticket and set up a hotel in one shot.

maybe you could take a boat. it's like one of those large catamaran boats the us navy just bought.

also last time i went there '99, i stayed at the marriott. i think they got some other chains as well. hilton? but they had tons of buildings there, so they could have more now.

exchange places are at the airport in hk.
