NY-to-LA drive in record 28 hours, 50 minutes

you would think that if they were serious they would rig up an extra gas tank and just use old mt dew bottles so no stops required

the other question is, how do you prove this? Can I claim that I made it in 26 hours? (Because I totally did)

They added a 22 gallon auxiliary tank.

They added an extra 44 gallons of fuel tank to the car, giving it a total of 67 gallons capacity.

Before they left, they arranged for a forensic vehicle tracking company to install a real-time tracker and produce a signed and verifiable record of the vehicle's whereabouts.

They're a couple of asshats if you ask me. Driving at an average speed of 98MPH isn't safe for anyone. Take the goddamn plane!

Part of me wishes that they get into legal trouble for doing this.

Not me. I think the US should have some roads similar to the Autobahn. When the Feds released the 65mph restriction on states several years ago, I applauded Montana (and a couple other states) that removed speed limits completely from some of their more rural highways. I believe Montana has put new restrictions, possibly 80mph, on those highways now, however.

People do 80 all the time regardless. So if the limit is 80, does that mean people regularly do 90-100?

that's badass.

actually 2 22 gallon tanks - they say 800 mile range / 67 gallons, so they estimated 12mpg, 100mph ave?

2803 miles - 3 1/2 fillups

i have a 20 gallon compressor tank and i wouldn't want to know what 2 of those filled with gas in a 2 door would be like in a crash

I figured the record would be held by a small displacement 80-mpg motorcycle with touring mods like a huge tank.

They should have arrest warrants issued from every state and county they drove through. It's nice of them to provide all the self-incriminating evidence too.

One of the writers for a Motorcycle mag did a run from Alaska to Key West Florida in 4 days -- on a motorcycle! This was around 2004 if I remember...

there's no way americans would tolerate the price tag attached to an autobahn-like highway - the strict policing, driving standards, vehicle standards and road standards cost a fortune. and those things are needed, because there's no way 1/2 of all cars/drivers belong on a highway going 100+ mph.

besides, the american roadworks industry can't (won't) even do a decent job on the regular highways, which are under perpetual construction.

Not really that feasible. Those small displacement bikes run out of go past 80 pretty quickly. Especially if you weigh it down with extra gas tanks and such.

Not to mention the focus required for the ride for that long that fast. Talk about super human.

Also the weather you'd have to potentially endure. You really could be at risk for either heat exhaustion or just being really fucking cold.

Article indicates they drove 2813.7 miles via I-40, but Google maps only shows 2798 miles. 😕
The other route suggested shows 2814 miles, but they don't pass the states during the run.

Start - 142 E 31st St, New York, NY 10016
Finish - 260 Portofino Way, Redondo Beach, CA 90277
