By the way, the folks gloating about the supposed lack of progressive views in normally "blue" states got me thinking. Actual same sex MARRIAGE is pretty rare, but a stepping stone is the idea of civil unions. You give gay people the same rights as a married heterosexual couple, without stepping on the toes of straight people apparently upset that the gays are stealing their words. It's such a good middle ground that a lot of anti-gay marriage activists claim they have no problem with civil unions, just so long as the straight people get to keep "marriage" to themselves.
And here's where the progressive/"red state hick" line becomes a little more defined. 18 states have constitutional bans on both same sex marriage AND other kinds of same-sex unions (like civil union). These states grant absolutely no rights to gay couples, no marriage, no legal partners, no nothing. And with the exception of Virginia, Ohio and Michigan, it's exactly the states you'd expect.
States that ban ANY kind of rights for gay couples aren't "protecting marriage", it's just legislative gay bashing, because the actual kind gets you thrown in jail now.
