It's a matter of opinion that he acts smug about cheating

Why are you going to bring this up? All I said in my previous post was that he acts a lot differently around the Boston media and is generally more friendly. He's always been that way. I never said anything about cheating, but now we're talking about cheating again.

We have two choices in this thread. It can either degenerate into another Patriots*, cheater, blah blah thing or it can continue to be a reasonable discussion about a football game.

Let's just get the first option out of the way:

First, we're going to rehash what the Patriots did. You're going to say it was entirely out of line, that it was the worst thing to happen to football and that it calls into question all their previous wins. Then I'm going to say other teams have done this before, other teams have cheated before, individual players cheat on a regular basis and why aren't we dealing with that? You'll counter saying this is a team-wide thing and that it stems from the coaching. I'll say that individuals always make poor choices, but that I don't see how a coach's choice affects the players beneath him.

Second, you're going to say they're a classless team, that they run up the score and that all they care about is winning at any cost. I'll agree with the latter part, but try to tell you that it isn't running up the score, blah blah blah. You'll probably also mention something about how this scandal proves that Brady is no good and that it's the only way he's succeeded. I'll probably point out that there are plenty of other QBs in the league who are good who weren't highly drafted.

Third, you'll tell me that the team should get asterisks over all their wins because of this scandal. I'll tell you that it happened in week 1, that there is no proof that it happened before, and that expunging past victories would be impossible. Then I'll try and say that their success this season should be proof the other three weren't flukes. You'll tell me that Belichik wasn't a man because he didn't own up to what he did - I'll say that I might agree with you and that he certainly is an egotistical bastard, but a hell of a coach.

Finally, you'll think I'm a stupid blindly loyal Patriots fan and I'll think you're just a bitter fan who hates the Patriots because they've been so good. Ultimately, we'll have resolved nothing, we'll probably both be half-right and half-wrong, but neither one of us will admit that.

I'm glad we got that out of our system. Let's resume our normally schedule thread now, shall we?

Holy crap. That post was like watching Frank the Tank debate on the role of government in the field of innovation. Seriously, that was perfect, there's simply no real response to that statement. Well done.

Peaceful discussion -

Can anybody explain to me how the whole "spread" and "over/under" concepts function?

The spread is how much one team is going to beat another. Lets say Pats are favored by 23.5 points, that means they have to beat the Jets by 24 points for whoever bets on the Pats. So if the Pats win 24-10 and you bet on the Pats, you lose the bet. But if you bet on the Jets, you win the bet.

over/under just means the total number of points for both teams. If you think the over/under of the Pats/Jets game is low at 47 and you think the score is going to be 73-10, then bet the over. If you think the line is too high and the score is 24-20, then bet the under.

There's still enough room on this bandwagon for more Pats fan. I'm driving the wagon.

They are all about betting. The lines generally have nothing to do with the expected outcome (over/under lines are a little different as the actual game score has much more of an effect on them), they are designed to get people to bet in approximately equal amounts for either side. For example with this game the original line came out at about 24.5 points favoring the Pats. If a lot of people are betting the Pats then the line may move to 26 points for the Pats to encourage betting for the Jets. If most of the money thinks the original spread is too great, then the 24.5 will reduce till more money starts coming in for the Pats.

So, everyone knows (or should) that every single NFL team tapes the signals. It's kind of a don't ask, don't tell policy among teams as long as you do it from certain levels in the stadium. I agree with him about the Pats in general, I certainly don't necessarily think his invented argument was an exact replica of your thought process. Arguing both sides of an argument yourself and then saying "done" works pretty well, though, if your goal is more to end the argument than to "win". That's why it was perfect. Did I simplify that enough for you?

Looks like Mangini was still ticked off and decided to retaliate against Belicheck this year when they met again.

So, Mangina was who we thought he was. We won't let him go though, and he'll get pwned like the mangina he is.

Edit: Here's the rest of that story
The Jets have not asked the undefeated Patriots if they can film from the end zones this Sunday at Foxborough.

``Just didn't look to get permission,'' Mangini said. ``Didn't think it would be granted.''

New England coach Bill Belichick refused to address the situation during his news conference with Patriots reporters.

``There's a lot of things that have happened in the past,'' Belichick said. ``Really, the past is in the past.''

Patriots players were also staying away from the issue, much as they did when Pittsburgh's Anthony Smith guaranteed a victory over New England last week.

``It just doesn't matter. Who cares?'' safety Rodney Harrison said. ``It has no impact whatsoever, just like when Smith made his comments. It has no impact. The game isn't won or lost through the media Monday through Saturday. It's won or lost on Sunday, 1 o'clock. It's whoever makes more plays.''

This is just the latest in the long-running rivalry between the teams. After helping Belichick and the Patriots win three Super Bowls as a defensive assistant, Mangini left to become coach of the Jets. The relationship between the two has been frosty since.

Things got even chillier after a Patriots video assistant was caught taping from the sidelines during their game against the Jets in Week 1, a move some speculated fueled New England's drive to perfection. The NFL punished the Patriots by taking away their first-round draft pick, fined them $250,000 and fined Belichick another $500,000.

A league rule prohibits teams from using a video camera on the sidelines for any purpose. In the Jets' case, they were filming from the end zone. The Jets film from both end zones during practice, a common procedure used by NFL teams.

``When you practice, anytime you practice, you try to shoot the unit from the sideline and then from the end zone behind them, so that you can see hand placement, fits, that type of thing,'' Mangini said. ``That's how you watch practice every day. That's how you evaluate practice every day. And it's the same thing with games. You like to have that same copy because, really, that's just an extension of the evaluation.''

Mangini was unsure how many teams have asked for similar permission from New York, but said the Jets have granted it to those that have. He also said the Jets have not been turned down by any teams this season.

``It's usually just a function of whether there's a location that we can do it from or not,'' he said. ``It's a pretty common courtesy.''

Seriously, I like Mangini and had no problem when he left the Pats to take the Jets job. I will never fault a guy for doing something that I would do if I were in his shoes. This whole feud with your mentor, however, has just gotten ridiculous and will no doubt take a lot of the attention away from the game itself. I don't know if Mangini will get fired after this season or not but I don't think we can rule out that possibility considering the Jets' record. If that happens, do you think any team in the AFC East will hire him? The Patriots are tough enough to handle without Belichick having extra motivation to make the game a public execution of your team, which will undoubtedly occur if your team hires Mangini. By burning his bridges with Belichick, Mangini was either cocky enough to feel that he's better than Belichick and will turn the Jets into perennial super bowl contenders, or will never get fired from his job as the Jets head coach. Imagine if Mangini is fired and can't get another head coaching job and has to ask Bill to take him back on his staff . . . aint Karma a bitch if that happens?

To all the haters who think I'm just a blind Patriots fan, I'm not. What the Pats did was wrong and there's no denying that. However, this seems to have been one of those rules that were never enforced and many teams did the same thing. The Patriots simply got caught and are rightfully paying the price for it. It also doesn't mean that the Patriots can't hold a grudge against the team that ratted them out to the League. Personally, I can't wait to see what happens on Sunday. The Boston Massacre was already used when the Yankees swept the Sox in a five game series two years ago. How about the Boston Blood Bath? Excuse my poor attempts at alliteration. :)

check out the new Power Rankings on ESPN.com.

The Patriots are obviously #1 and the comment next to the ranking is this:
"Here's what Bill Belichick should do when he meets Eric Mangini at midfield following the Pats' 58-3 win Sunday: Hand Mangini a camcorder and say, "I don't know what I was thinking stealing your crappy team's signs. But feel free to tape ours.""

That's classic.

They should spot the jets 24 points, let them videotape the pats, and let them listen in on their offensive playcalls just to make the game more even :D

I don't even think that would make up the difference :(

How about you play with less defenders on the field? :p

My predicition is... 42-10 Pats. Maybe more for the Pats, I dunno... 49?

You missed the comments for Mangina

"Here's what Eric Mangini should do when he meets Bill Belichick at midfield following the 58-3 loss Sunday: Hand him a copy of the Leave Bill Belichick Alone YouTube clip and say, "Is this what you were taping 'cause I gotta say, it's damn funny!"

I really wouldn't be surprised if the Jets get shut out. You know Bruschi and Harrison and chomping at the bits to make a statement for their coach. I'm expecting some seriously hard hits and an extremely motivated D.

What is funny is some Pats, and a lot of their fans are mad at the Jets for telling on them. As if the Pats have any right to be upset. The Pats cheated, and got a slap on the wrist for it. They embarrassed themselves, and disrespected the game. But they're upset? Please.

Let's see... everyone else is cheating, everyone knows it, but the Jets bitched about the Pats, so we get in trouble. Time for the whiners to get ruined.

This thread is hilarious.

Anyone who's complaining about this "cheating" needs to get a life. I think your damn sore losers, because, the fact is, I don't care if you've got a camera 2 inches from the QB's hand, you still need to be a great team to go 16-0.

Yes, I don't think I'll even make any more of the 10 or so points i was going to make against all of you who can't take a loss, it's just so immature...

*for those who don't know what it means, heres a good definition "The patriots just wrecked the every team in the NFL, and they've got no plans of stopping. Get over it."
