NY doesn't have 40k to keep John Brown's grave intact

Closing the burial site would save taxpayers about $40,000 a year — a tiny chunk of New York's $8 billion deficit. Historian James Stewart says that's not enough to warrant the loss of an important civil rights landmark.

fourty friggen thousand dollars to save the burial sight of one of the greatest americans. I wonder how much money is spent on william henry harrison's grave.

Huh? Why exactly does it cost $40,000 per year to have a burial site?

Could hire a teacher with the money and that would have a much bigger impact on NY than a grave that somehow costs money after the person was buried.

John Brown's farm had roughly 60,000 visitors last year — a fraction, Keefe says, of the 56 million visitors to New York's state parks.

Sounds like the state is paying for a single park ranger + farm upkeep.

The problem with the liberal way of thinking is they apply the "only so much" label to everything and then you end up like NY or CA..

CA was fucked by their idiotic property tax restrictions. Most other states are just having a rough time because of the recession.

I don't know how anyone can't think this landmark is worth protecting.

Because it doesn't cost $40,000 to keep a dead person in the ground, in fact, it is free.

Really . I have lost love ones for fact. But to say once there gone the money stops following them , Not true Mowing and plowing grave yards is expensive now days. We have graves that go back 300 years near by. and for 300 years they been cared for . Even tho when they were burried they payed like $20 to be burried and cared for . What a deal they made. The cemetary near by is running out of space. The only way they can expand is in my direction . It won't belong now befor were bought out and I am going to get what my land is valued in lots or I won't sell. and I have 5 acres now so people keep up the good work and be fruitful and multiply. So that grave yard fills up this year.
$5000 dollars for a 3x6 lot . Man I have lots of lots.

Jesus. I didn't realize conservative greed overrode revering the resting places of american heroes.

Conservative greed? WTF? Did I miss where someone turned this into a liberal v conservative issue?

My question is, why does it cost that much to maintain one grave?

His stance against slavery was great, but he murdered innocent people and even Lincoln called him a "misguided fanatic". That's a side track though, it doesn't have anything to do with NY spending 40k on maintaining his grave site.

I'm not saying it isn't, but if NY wasn't run by a bunch of stupid liberals we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Are you really dumb enough to think CA's problems are due to property tax restrictions? So I guess it is OK with you for people who have lived in a home 30+ years to get taxed out of their property? Hell, there are many people in CA that would have had their property stolen by the government if you had your way. Who would you go crying to for a solution to that one when it was the government doing the stealing??

It would be too simple to ask for $0.67 from each person that actually wanted to visit the farm now wouldn't it??

But...but...but....
That might put an unreasonable financial burden on the poor and we couldn't have that :(

Close to me they are also shutting down John Jay's estate (first Chief US Justice), Stony Point battlefield (one of main battle sites in Rev War) and Fort Montgomery (another battle site where they had big chain across Hudson River).

I spent every summer vacation as a child traveling this great nation in a car pulling a camping trailer. I have been just about everywhere important at least once. Our favorite places to camp were National Parks where there were usually no attendants. There was a drop box with envelopes and you simply paid for your stay when you left...on the honor system. Something tells me though that most of the people that would visit this monument probably wouldn't pay unless they had no choice....even if it was only $.75.

He's a dead guy stuffed in a box that's buried underneath some dirt. Nothing more.

Stick a plaque at the burial site explaining his historical significance and call it a day. Spending $40k/yr on maintaining a grave is a complete waste of taxpayer money.

I would pay $1 if the site would give an accurate accounting of why this guy was important to our history.

History fades quickly in most of the U.S., but my kids hear the story of John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry every time we go there. Hey, we also take walking tours in Europe where there is a story for every street corner.

Brown was born in Torrington, CT, not that far from NY. They could move his body there and the town could use the tourist flow.

Or just move him to Harper's Ferry, WV. That would be something.

Ny has plenity of money . Why else would they be giving over a billion dolllars to GF and Arab company . What the arabs broke to . so the grave thing really doesn't matter here . For an American hero . Lets just forget about those who made this nation great at one time.
