I read about their plan to borrow money from their pension fund to, uh... pay their pension fund and my head exploded.

meanwhile, students are protesting at NYC City Hall about fucking metro cards

Sounds an awful lot like Greece protests. You know, the socialist gravy train has crashed and they still want their free ride.

Which brings me to the conclusion of inevitability. Be it this year, next year, or later. The people are demanding bankruptcy through untenable handout policies.

sounds like the right kind of crisis to help get the next fed stim package passed...

all gov't pensions need to go under pbgc... whatever funds really exist (that should be an interesting accounting) go into pbgc and then all the recips get their fair share... no double dipping, early siphoning, etc...

The world is quickly reaching the tipping point where there are too many dependents in society for the actual producers of wealth to care for, and government employees are dependents.

The PBGC is in need of a bailout too - right now. Running in the red.

Or, from the liberal perspective:
The world is quickly reaching the tipping point where there are more dependents in society than the actual producers of wealth are willing to care for, and government employees are working to take that choice out of their hands.

yeah, and having it taken over by the feds is probably in the new stim bill... but they need to put all the gov't pensions in it first so they can all be discounted/reduced like all the private pensions that have ended up in there...

it's stupid and wrong that bankrupt gov't entities get any better treatment than private entities...

Hmm, that makes sense to me. I wonder if we can count on the government to bolster it with real dollars, or will they just use IOU's?

I mean, we know they're not going to do that because it just makes too much sense. It would be a great "out" for them.

He'll kowtow to the unions as long as he can get away with it.

this is all just bored saturday morning typing... not a chance that anything but a full, iou based, bailout of the gov't workers will happen...

But you're right, they shouldn't be treated any different than private sector workers. The country is bankrupt.

Sacrifices are being made by those working in the private sector. Government workers should share in the pain along with everyone else. Their pensions are just as unsustainable as those of the private sector. Face the music now, or face it later.

The name of the game is to make it through four years and dump it on the next guy. It's finally caught up with us. Only hard, unpopular decisions are going to give us the results needed.

Viva la Christie!

Many government workers are getting "performance incentives" in their paychecks now. Ask me how I know. :D

Illinois isnt much better off. Infact, it might be worse
It's a high stakes game of musical chairs. Broke countries borrowing money to bail out other broke countries who borrowed money to keep their broke country afloat.

But in this game, when the music stops, nobody is going to have a chair.

First the states, eventually the nation.

Edit: It's all the fault of Bush! :whiste:

Nope. As I've said here, I mostly apply for other jobs and post on AT rather than working. I've been a federal employee for 2 years, gotten two promotions, a recruitment incentive, a retention incentive, and now I randomly got a letter thanking me for my contributions, along with a statement saying I'll receive a one-time "performance incentive" in my next paycheck: $625. Hell, I even took off the entire month of January this year to go work overseas.

NY will do the right thing. Instead of cutting non vital services I'm sure they will attack needed services. They have too. If they were to cut the crap then it would prove they could have all along. Instead they're going to shut down the money making parks, the police etc.

That's NY for you.

The police are part of the problem. 20 and out mentality and outrageous overtime allocation makes the police a huge drain on our system. Do I want more police? Yes.Would I rather have 1 guy earning 100k or 2 guys earning 50k? I'd pick the two guys in a heartbeat.
