New York AG: "We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity"

It's investigation "is no longer purely civil in nature," a spokesperson for the NY attorney general said in an emailed statement.

The New York attorney general's office said Tuesday night it has informed the Trump Organization that its investigation into the company "is no longer purely civil in nature" and is now a criminal one.
Why it matters: New York Attorney General Letitia James' office is now working with the Manhattan district attorney's office, which has been investigating the Trump Organization for potential bank, tax and insurance fraud.
Driving the news: New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) announced last August that her office had filed a lawsuit to compel the Trump Organization to comply with subpoenas related to an investigation into whether former President Trump and his company improperly inflated the value of its assets on financial statements.
  • Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for James, said in an emailed statement: "We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA." Levy declined to comment further.
What they're saying: Representatives for the Trump Organization did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment on the news, first reported by CNN.
  • But Trump has previously denied any wrongdoing and called the investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance a political "witch hunt."

Everything you've said is based on the assumption of guilt, that's not how it works. Internet guilt will get you kicked off twitter, it won't send you to jail. Internet guilt is based on "everyone knows", criminal guilt requires actual evidence.
The NY attorney general thinks there is evidence of a crime having been committed. That's not a conviction. You have to remember that little thing that happens between the accusation and the sentence.

It's the same investigation as it's always been, genius. This is his first chance to go to prison! How dumb does someone have to be to not know this?

Any person with a brain in their head who isn't consumed by partisanship would rationally look at the situation and conclude that Trump is in very serious legal jeopardy.

1) Trump has a documented history of exactly this sort of criminal activity.
2) The DA has won access to all his financial information.
3) The DA has convened a grand jury in the case.

Nobody knows how this will end obviously, but that it doesn't take a legal genius to see Trump is in a heap of trouble.
 
It would be normal for a methodical investigation into a criminal enterprise, working on securing individuals willing to take plea bargains to help capture the big fish. It has been reported for a long time that Weisselberg is such a target, and that pressure is being applied to his family. I'm not sure what constitutes this particular notice, but it seems far from arbitrary which suggests to me they have secured some particular piece of evidence or a plea agreement for an informant.

anyway, we shall see. This one isn't about the administration. It's about the Trump family. Granted, all of them were "the administration," but there are very real, very serious financial crimes here. Not that fake bullshit that even an ignorant rapist stooge like Gingrich eventually gave up on with the Clintons.

It may or may not amount to anything. Clearly most folks here hate Trump, and have a total belief in his guilt, without even knowing what the crime is. That's an emotional response, not a logical one. The same thing was evidenced during the Muller investigation. I can't count the number of times I heard "the smoking gun" or "the walls are closing in". But at the end of it all, the only thing they could say about Trump was that they "couldn't exonerate him".
Arguing about Trump's guilt or innocence is nothing more than a pastime. It's the same as arguing over the merits of different sports ball teams.

Look, just because you choose to remain ignorant of the freely, easily available information of the Trump org's long, long, documented history of self-dealing and financial fraud, doesn't mean the rest of us are.
