Nwe cooler: still 45 c when idle

Hi,

Picked up a silver orb slot a cooler, removed the thermal sticker, put on thermal paste, seated it nicely on my cpu..
Still 45 c when doing nothing!
I have my case open and room temp is approx 20 c.
My specs:

a7v + t-bird 700 not oc
300 watt approved psu
asus gf 256 ddr
ibm 20 gb utra ata 66
133 mhz mem brand "cube"
compaq nic

Try Two 80mm Sunon case fans this will help drop temperature,BTW I think the $12 Taisol is a better heatsink/fan then the Silver Orb you have.

It's not the golden orb, it's the new silver orb. It was tested just 2-3 c
above the alpha coolers.
But it's really not about the cooler. with the default cooler temp was 48 c
and i think my thunderbird is running too hot for a not oc system.

Sorry I meant Silver Orb ,anyway put 2 80mm case fans in,it lowered my Temperature by 8C for the CPU.Btw 48c is within the safety factor.

I'm in a similar boat as you. I keep reading all these reviews where they are running 40-42c at load. I'm at 41C right now on the net, but it's cool in here and it hasn't been running long. I've used the fop32-1 and now the Hedgehog and it has made little difference. I lapped both to a shiny smooth.. no help. I tried other greases... no help (worse). I'm back to Arctic Silver, the all copper hedgehog, and the YS 27cfm fan. Next, I am going to try a 38cfm fan only if it is quiet. I suspect the accuracy in temp is askew on the A7V or it doesn't matter. I've read that over 115F and you lose stability. I have yet to see it and I've been up to 54C on many occasions when cranking away in a toasty room.

I would have saved moola by just sticking with the fop32-1 but you never know until you try something yourself.

well, i complained to my reseller about it, hope they will trade the cpu for a more "cool" type.
At jumperfree mode the cpu asks for 1.75 volts. pretty high for a 700 eh?

My CPU temp right now is 41C it used to be around 47-48C before my fans were fitted (I`ve a Thunderbird 900mhz),I`ve yet to see it go pass 45C under full load with case closed.

🙂

AMB ,I think it depends on your case & motherboard, the MSI K7T PRO board gets quite warm because of those huge capacitors, anyway it`s at 40C now so it does variey.

Rover,

What BIOS version are you using ?? 1004 bios raises the idle temp significantly. Check the forums, a test with an independant digital thermal probe confirmed this. Secondly, why did you remove the compound supplied with the HSF ?? Most thermal pastes are not as good as the CHOMERICS T725 PCTC that is pre-applied. Most people over apply the compound and DEGRADE the thermal interface.
