Honestly, your first guitar won't matter too much. Just buy a cheap acoustic at Guitar Center or a "starter pack" with gig bag, chord book, a few picks, and a tuner and just learn. Once you get good enough you can upgrade and grab something better. (Also good in case you don't keep up with the hobby)

EDIT: a lot of beginners prefer coated strings as it's easier on your fingers as well. (A decent set will run about $10) I've never had an issue with normal steel strings on my fingers, but then again I have calluses all over my hands from weight lifting, so I guess I'm pretty rough on my hands anyway.

not true, if it's too crappy he will most likely give up (probably will anyway, there's a beginner guitar thread here every day it seems)

I say you go play some and see how they feel, and take along a friend who plays.

I would suggest using the search function, only because this question seems to come up with alarming regularity ;)
Maybe the guitarheads should get together and add an item on the AT wiki.

I guess I probably will since most people give up on most things they try (otherwise we'd all still be eating our boogers) but I really hope not. I put a little over 2 good years into piano before I finally got sick of losing my practise room to some music major that needed to get an hour in because they waited until 60min before their lesson to practise. Also, I'm significantly older than the usual 13-15y.o.s that play guitar so their band can be famous one day. I have very low expectations, and I want to play because I want to play guitar; I think that is a solid reasoning and lends itself to sticking with it. The only goals I have are to be able to play well enough to satisfy myself with my proficiency at a hoby.

My bad, I did search first. After a couple pages and a few threads on electric guitars I figured it would be quicker for me and unharmful to everyone else if I just posted.

I have to be honest with you, the closer to $300 you spend on the guitar, the happier you'll probably be in the end if you actually keep practicing ;)
That list on about.com is actually pretty good.

It's true. Like running shoes or a bike--the better the fit the more you'll use it.
